CKC Summer Tournament 2003
For those making a weekend of it the tournament started in some style with a BBQ and free disco
at Lloyd Park on the Saturday before the main event. The Dutch were certainly in the mood
for a party and some slightly cringe-worthy tunes soon had them up on their feet packing
the dance-floor. The locals were more predictably more cagey, although by the time
"Macho Macho Man" made its somewhat unexpected outing on the decks, many could not hold themselves
back...
The next day, the blazing sun and Lloyd Park joined Croydon Korfball Club in hosting
the biggest club tournament in the UK. 28 teams from all over the UK and five from
Holland (Sorting Delta, Eureka, Wordt Kwiek, Luno and Atalante) converged to
compete in the tournamant this year. The hoards were
greeted by the sweet smell of sizzling sausage and bacon and a series of 18 minute
morning group matches, closely followed by a BBQ and, for the quicker ones out there,
strawberries and cream.
With the pools decided, the afternoon games continued a pace
as did the sun with very few breaks in the weather. There were some interesting
developments during the day including some potential publicity/infamy for the sport
after someone managed to park on the Tram lines! Special thanks should also go to Sandra behind
the mike who managed to call some of our Dutch friends "Boring Delta" (it's really not
that close to Sporting Delta) and we're still looking for "Bistro City" on the team sheet!
The final pool games were extended affairs and, bar the Grand Final, played simultaneously.
The pool winners were:
4th Pool: Croydon 2
3rd Pool: Crystal Palace
2nd Pool: Croydon 1
Atalante and Small Giants contested the Grand Final and after a close match, Small
Giants eventually won the trophy in extra time. Congratulations to everyone who played
and made the event what it was.
See you next year on the last weekend in June.
