Croydon 1 ease past Nomads

Croydon entertained Nomads and, indeed, the crowd at Royal Russell School in their latest National League fixture. Croydon fielded an unchanged side with Steve Jones and Dave Butters joined by Kim Jones and Anna Jeanes in attack and Ivan Aquino, Ross Carr-Taylor, Saskia de Jager and Sarah George in defence. Nomads were clearly lacking some of their more experienced players, for example, Richard Burrows and youth was rightly promoted to fill the gaps.

Croydon took advantage of this inexperience and got off to the proverbial flyer going 7-1 up inside twelve minutes with a well-worked goal from George. Indeed the goals were spread around the home side as Kim Jones got off the mark for the first time this season whilst de Jager scored her free-passes and Jeanes scored a snapshot to bring the sides to 10-3 at half time.

Just prior to this Nomads seemed to make a tactical change bringing on James Magowan for Anthony Taylor. The pattern of play continued unabated however as S Jones and de Jager continued their scoring runs. With the game safely won, the home side replaced Kim Jones with Lorna Elliot and Aquino with junior Dan Moore. Both were quickly at ease as the game slowly petered out with Croydon able to reach the 20 goal mark just before the end. The game finished 20-8.

Croydon will be encouraged by this display after last week's result against Invicta. For Nomads, predictions of a long hard season seem well placed on this performance.

Croydon 2 hold on to beat a spirited Nomads 2

Croydon 2 celebrated a good victory over Nomads 2 seemingly inspired by the 1st team's performance. Nomads started much the quicker though and raced to a 4-1 lead and after Croydon missed a penalty it looked as if Nomads were going to win comfortably. However Croydon dug deep and a combination of good defending and patient attacks saw them surge back and score the next five goals. Notable goals came from debutante Suzanne Robinson, and an intercept from Paul Jeanes who passed straight to Andy Withers who was quickly under the post without a defender in sight.

By this stage of the game, Croydon looked to be in control, but at 6-4 Nick Collier sustained an ankle injury and Dan Pratt was brought on as a substitute. Dan immediately got on the score board with a well taken long shot, and a nice little celebration ensued!

Croydon continued to play some good free-flowing korfball until half-time and went into the break 9-6 up. The second half was equally entertaining with goals being traded between the teams but Nomads were unable to close on the three goal gap. Nomads were beginning to get frustrated by the lack of space that Croydon afforded them, and were becoming increasingly vocal towards the referee. In such a close game, Nomads would have been better placed directing their energies towards the game in hand. Despite some late scares, Croydon held on to their lead to win 15-13.

Croydon reserves will be pleased to have won another tight game in recent weeks. In previous seasons the team has often ended up on the losing side in such encounters but now seem to have developed a concentrated but relaxed approach to the final few minutes and have consequently put away their chances. Nomads, however, will feel unfortunate not to have won but in tight matches a team must make their own luck and take chances when available.

Croydon 3 romp home away to Tottenham 2

The 3rd team enhoyed a good win against Tottenham 2 at the Southbury Leisure Centre in Enfield. Croydon scored first and never went behind.

By controlling the post Croydon were able to keep the ball and scored at regular intervals. Tammy Kentfield, who had injured her knee playing netball, had limited movement so spent the majority of her attacking controlling the post, and along with Becky Pratt allowed Chris Etheridge two goals and Mike Moore two goals. Good defence by them allowed Dan Pratt and Leah Palfreyman to score three a piece, well assisted by Leanna and Dan Moore, who scored two each.

Very well done to all of the team for the 8.15 start, followed by an excellent win. Final score 7-14.
