Croydon snuff out Trojans European hopes

Croydon entertained many people's tip for Europa Cup qualification at Royal Russell on Sunday. Croydon were without Saskia de Jager who was holidaying at home in Holland and were also hit by an injury to Kim Jones in the warm-up. Trojans looked to fielding their strongest line-up after their recent split with Tom Brady.

The match started well for the visitors as they raced to an early 0-2 lead after Ross Carr-Taylor conceded a penalty. Croydon were slow off the blocks and coach Peter Allan called an early time-out at 1-2. This clearly had the desired effect as Croydon scored the next 3 with goals from Sarah George, Steve Jones and a Dave Butters long shot. Referee Mike Humphries obviously had a new whistle for Christmas and he was keen to put it to good use as he gave two penalties to Croydon and one to Trojans in a low scoring first half. Trojans scored two late goals just before the break to bring the scores to parity at 6-all.
In a scrappy 2nd half, Croydon started well with another penalty and long shot from Ivan Aquino but the experienced Stella Hooker was running riot in attack as she netted three running in shots in quick succession, interspersed with another goal from Aquino and an opportunist one-hander from an otherwise quiet Steve Jones.

At 12-10, Allan called another time-out and from then on the game was Croydon's as they stretched to a 15-11 lead after more penalties and a running in shot from the lively Butters. Croydon were scrappy late on and conceded simple goals but eventually closed the game out 15-13.

In a frenetic game, Croydon managed to come out ahead despite not playing that well nor able to field their strongest line-up. Trojans had their chances and will wonder where it went wrong for them. This loss leaves them with only three points so far this season and their hopes of European qualification in tatters.

Croydon 3 sink West London 1

West London started well and pulled out a 2 goal lead but an experienced Croydon side eventually pulled this round in a dour first half to come into the break at 2-all. Fortunately for the home crowd, the 2nd half was far more free-following as Croydon kept out the visitors and scored 10 goals of their own with the scores spread around the team with only Julia Johnson failing to find the basket. Final score 12-2.

Croydon 4 sunk by Trojans 3

Croydon 4 welcomed Dutch trialist Luck Van Houtum to their starting line-up and he introduced some much needed flair (and a double hat-trick). The match also saw the first ever goal for Philip Aish for Croydon and a first goal of the season for Judi Sloman but this was not enough to beat Trojans' 3rd team as experience told. Final score 9-22.
