Croydon 2 beaten by Bec 2

In the first league match of the season, Croydon 2 entertained a distinctly average Bec 2 side at Royal Russell. Croydon lined up with captain Nigel Hudspith, Andy Withers, Tammy Kentfield and Anneka Barretto in attack with Dan Pratt, Zu Omar, Julia Johnson and Mandy Furlano in defence.

The hosts got off to a flyer with a goal from the first attack from Withers, shortly followed by a penalty also converted by Withers. Pratt followed this up with a running in shot and everything was looking rosy for the hosts. Bec were back into the game though after a foul by Barretto brought a penalty converted by Liam Clarke. Some "interesting" interpretations of the new free-pass rule were observed as players and referee struggled with the change in rules. Nonetheless Croydon pressed on and were awarded 3 penalties, only one of which they were able to convert as Johnson's rolled over and into the net. Bec pushed to the half time whistle though and scored two more goals to go in all square at 5-all.

Croydon came out of the blocks the better with Omar and Furlano converting running in shots but they were never able to turn a two goal lead into 3 or more and eventually Bec came back into the match aided no doubt by some inept passing and catching by the hosts complemented by a shocking shot to goal ratio. As the game came down to the wire, the battling Kentfield was perhaps harshly replaced by Lorna Elliot but in the final stages Croydon were unable to keep the visitors out and they hung on to win 8-10.

This was a poor performance from Croydon, the passing in particular was appalling at times and the Bec side were there for the taking.

Croydon 3 outplayed by Mitcham 3

Croydon 3 lined up with a few ringers for their first game of the season. In attack Mike and Chris Moore were joined by Lorna Elliot and Chris Etheridge, whilst in defence Steve Pratt and Simon Mills were joined by Kim Jones and Marika Barretto.

Mitcham for their part had a blend of young exuberance and wily experience. Croydon were up against it from the start with their girls unable to get the support they needed from the Croydon boys. Mitcham meanwhile played a calm game and took their chances well. The Croydon girls ended up scoring all but one of the goals but this was never going to be enough and Mitcham comfortably saw out the game 7-13. The highlight from a spectators point of view was the unfortunate headbutt on Peter Teague by an energetic Steve Pratt! We trust Peter gets well soon!

Croydon 4 put up a sterling fight against Trojans 3

Like the 3rds, Croydon 4 had some ringers but also included a debut for Andrew Lam and the welcome return of three old stagers: Bobby and Carol Allen and Angela Hook. Having not touched a ball (or some trainers!) for a while it took the old timers a few minutes to get into it but soon they were back into the groove.

A dazzling debut goal from Lam was complemented by a hat-trick from Andy Withers, a brace from Nigel Hudspith and a free pass and penalty from Sarah George. However this was not enough as Trojans pulled away in the 2nd half and sneaked out 8-13 to the good. A very good display considering Croydon played a player short and this was Trojans third team and an experienced one at that.
