Trojans enjoy second half shut out at Croydon

In an important match for the upper reaches of the Premier table, Croydon entertained Trojans at Royal Russell School. Croydon lined up with Steve and Kim Jones, Lorna Elliot and Andy Withers in attack with Ross Carr-Taylor, Paul Jeanes, Sarah George and Saskia de Jager in defence.

Trojans were the quickest out of the blocks with Dave Brooks netting a long shot early on but the returning Steve Jones levelled things from 4 metres. Matt Brooks converted a free-pass but de Jager netted to keep things all square. From then on Trojans continued to score at will with a combination of good long shooting and well worked chances near the post. Croydon's defending wasn't sharp enough and like last week they lacked fluency in attack. Carr-Taylor limped off early on with a recurrence of an ankle injury to be replaced by Ivan Aquino who was hot off a nine goal haul playing in the 3rd team. He immediately made his mark with an 8 metre goal but by this stage Trojans were ahead by 4 after another long shot from Matt Brooks.

Croydon couldn't cope with their opponents and they stretched their lead to 5 goals until a penalty from Jeanes brought the teams into the break at 8-12.

The 2nd half was one to forget for Croydon. They again lacked fluency in attack and continued to ship goals in defence. Marika Barretto was brought on for Sarah George but Croydon couldn't find their passes and the ball wouldn't go in the net. As Croydon's frustration increased Trojans were able to relax and even show-boat at times. With the game lost, Withers was substituted with 6 minutes remaining to give some air-time to Dan Pratt. The sub was unable to make much impact though and referee Humphries put Croydon out of their misery with the score at 8-21.

For Trojans this win will give them added confidence for the tough matches ahead. For Croydon, injuries and suspensions haven't helped but the season has started poorly with their attack faltering badly, this for a team whose attack is normally their greatest strength.

Croydon 2 suffer against Trojans 2

After last week, Croydon 2 were looking to show their metal against a good Trojans side. Croydon started okay and at 2-3 after goals from Anneka Barretto, the game looked in the balance but Croydon fell to pieces as Trojans made them pay for some poor defending and awful passing. The referee also struggled with some elementary decisions but the visitors coped the better with this and ended the half 2-11 to the good.

The 2nd half needed an improvement and Croydon brought some respectability to the scoreline with goals from Becky Pratt and another from Barretto plus penalties from Zu Omar and (amazingly) Julia Johnson. Dan Pratt limped off towards the end and Ivan Aquino, fresh from over 100 minutes of korfball already that day, came on. However he made little impact and the final whistle went with the scores 6-17 to the visitors.

Croydon 3 whallop Nomads 3

Nomads failed to cope with the energetic Ivan Aquino and were made to pay dearly. Despite a shocking penalty miss and some limp under the basket shoots, Aquino rained in 9 goals.
He was joined on the scoresheet by Amanda Furlano, Chris Etheridge and Mike Moore. The 3rds will be hoping Ivan can make it every week!

Croydon 4 beaten by Supernova 3

The Croydon team was a mixture of old and new with Becky and Kathy Dean and Natalie Walton starting their first ever matches. The team got over to a steady start with good work from Kathy Dean, Simon Mills, Mike Etheridge and Helen Mansfield but Supernova held the lead at half time. An injury to one of their girls though meant they played a player short which opened up some opportunities for Croydon. Etheridge was keen to profit as he scored a well-taken running in shot and long shots from Mills, Mansfield and Dan Pratt helped the score along. However Thursday night coach, Steve Jones, will be disappointed to hear that 3 penalties were missed and this ultimately cost the team dearly as Supernova ended in front at 6-9.
