Croydon and Nottingham battle out a draw

Nottingham entertained Croydon at Clifton Campus which was always going to be an important mid-table clash. Due to injuries, Croydon made two changes to their starting lines-up with Ivan Aquino coming in for Ross Carr-Taylor and Dave Butters for Andy Withers.

After two disappointing weeks, Croydon were keen to regain some respect after poor second half performances. Croydon started with Paul Jeanes, Ivan Aquino, Saskia de Jager and Sarah George in attack, with the Joneses, Dave Butters and Lorna Elliott in defence. Croydon were quick out of the blocks with goals from de Jager and a converted penalty from Jeanes, but Nottingham then started to find the basket and goals were traded until 4-4. Croydon then began to eke out a lead with goals from Aquino, Jeanes, Kim Jones and 6 from Steve Jones. Croydon went into the break two up with the score lying at 11-9.

Based on previous weeks' performances, a two goal cushion was of little comfort and when Nottingham scored the first goal of the second half, it would have been easy for Croydon's heads to drop. However the team pulled together and battled with further goals from Jeanes and another hatful for Jones. At one stage Croydon held a 5 goal lead, but somehow managed to let this slip and it soon became a two goal deficit. Croydon pulled level with two more goals from Jones (bringing his personal total to 13) to leave the score at 20-20. With a matter of minutes left Carr-Taylor was brought on for Jones, and the attack of Jeanes, Aquino, de Jager and George earned a penalty. Jeanes had missed the previous penalty so up stepped Aquino. The clock had run out and so the pressure was on, and unfortunately for Croydon, the penalty did not drop.

However all is not lost for Croydon, who will be buoyed by the fact that goals are starting to be scored, and with the men recovering from injury, the fight for places should certainly provide the coach with food for thought.

Croydon 2 lose out to Nottingham 2

After the 4ths missed 3 penalties last week, the 2nds went one better and missed 4. Basic stuff. Let's hope they all turn up at training on Thursday and put the effort in to correct their technique and put these chances away.

The first half of this match was a low scoring affair, with Croydon always chasing the game. Nottingham scored the first two goals, but Croydon pulled back level thanks to a penalty from Zu Omar and a Dan Pratt long shot. Nottingham opened up the gap again, only for Omar to pull them level again with a drop-off and a further penalty.

The second half continued to see goals traded, but after levelling the scores at 6 all, Croydon fell away as the Nottingham boys found the basket and the ref gave a few borderline decisions. However the 2nds need to concentrate on their game and not get caught up in other issues. Nottingham ran out 14-10 victors.

Zu is proving to be a useful second team player and shows promise for the future, however he needs to be careful with his communication on court...... phrases such as "I see you baby" can be misconstrued - it is still unclear whether Dan was "shaking his ass" or not, however the spectators enjoyed it! And there was the other classic - "What the $*&# am I doing?" - stay tuned for next weeks installment of the Zu show....
