Croydon thump Castle

Croydon took on National League new-comers at Kidsgrove Leisure Centre, Staffordshire in a match where neither side had a win so far this season. Croydon's starting line-up was Steve and Kim Jones, Dave Butters and Julia Johnson in attack with Ivan Aquino, Paul Jeanes (c), Saskia de Jager and Sarah George in defence.

Croydon started well with opportunities a-plenty, Kim Jones captitalised on a few of hers to score the opening 2 goals, closely followed by a Jeanes penalty. Castle had a chance to get back into the match but Claire Crafter missed her spot-shot and soon Croydon were back in attack with further goals from George and Steve Jones. At 0-5 after 10 minutes, Castle looked a bit shell-shocked but they rallied and scored two goals from their girls, who looked their most likely bet throughout the match. However they were not able to handle Croydon's attack and it produced several more goals to lead at half-time 3-11.

The 2nd half was a similar affair with Johnson surprising everyone with two well-taken goals and Steve Jones making the most of some sharp interplay with Butters round the post. de Jager scored a stand-out goal as she ran in after being fed by Jones from the opposite half. With 7 minutes to go Carr Taylor aws brought on in place of Jones. However, Croydon seemed to realise the match was shortly over and started chancing their arms and playing far too hurriedly. Aquino, in particular, was guilty of an another unseemly miss under the post. This sloppiness didn't affect the scoreline overly however as all players managed to get their name on the scoresheet, even desperate Dave Butters, who managed to convert a late penalty (a la Kezman)!

Final score: 6-25

Croydon 3 do battle with Woking 1

The thirds had a home game against Woking which unfortunately they lost. The squad had a mix of experience, mature, young and determined players i.e. Susan Baker, Leah Palfreyman, Mike Etheridge and Michael Moore starting in defence and Marika Barretto, Helen Mansfield, Daniel Moore and Chris Etheridge in attack.

They started well with a lovely long shot from Moore junior but just as quick Woking scored! ...and then Woking was scoring in between our scoring. oops. It was nice to see Susan playing after injury and well done to Marika for 'working the post' enabling the boys to score in that section. Notice we could have done father and son sections but decided to split the two duos up. Moore senior did scored two goals but was unable to copy his son's long shot. Thank you Micky Eheridge for playing it was appreciated and even though the final score was 9 - 18 the game did look closer. Maybe if I (Lorna) had been able to offer some coaching advice the game would have been closer but I just didn't know what to say for once! Very rare, Ed.

Croydon 4 beaten by Mitcham 4

A touch of nostalgia was in the air with a short but welcome return of Ali & Dave Rotherham to the 4ths. The new look 4ths were up against a Mitcham team of youth and old heads. The team set out with Ali, Dave, Andrew Lam and Kathy Dean in attack with Dan Pratt, Zu Munshi, Natalie Walton and Beccy Dean in defence. Croydon were cought cold and were 0-1 down inside 2 minutes, this then became 0-3 until a spirited fight back levelled the scores at 3-3, leaving 3-4 at half-time. Although improving every week, a bit of inexperience let mitcham run out 4-7 winners in the end. Really pleasing to see were goals from new girls Natalie with a one handed running in shot, and Kathy who got into space at the side of the post after a brilliant 4 pass move. Old head Ali bagged the other 2 goals with a great long shot and 1 from the penalty spot
