Mitcham roll over Croydon

Croydon lined up in the old firm match with Dave Butters, Anneka Barretto, Steve and Kim Jones in attack with Paul Jeanes, Ross Carr-Taylor, Sarah George and Saskia de Jager in defence.

Croydon started well with Steve Jones finding his range from the penalty spot for two free-pass goals but soon Mitcham were back in the match and they pushed on to an early 2-4 lead. A penalty from Jeanes was Croydon's reposte but penalties in reply from Dave Synott and Steve Green helped Mitcham into a 4-8 lead at half time.

The 2nd half was one to forget for Croydon as Mitcham picked up their scoring whilst Croydon dropped their's. A long shot from Jeanes was the only goal from open play in the 2nd half from the home side as Mitcham plugged away and got their rewards. George and Jeanes were replaced by Marika Barretto and Ivan Aquino but neither were able to have much impact and the game ebbed away with Mitcham winning 7-18.
Croydon will be relatively pleased with their first half performance but only scoring two goals from open play must be alarming for coach, Peter Allan. On the plus side, Anneka Barretto had a fine match and proved she play at this level. Mitcham didn't perform to their best but they kept their composure and after the early flurries, the result never looked in doubt.

Croydon 2 vs Mitcham 2

After last week's battle in the BKA Cup, Croydon were out to avenge their defeat. They lined up with Andy Withers, Ivan Aquino, Marika Barretto and Mandy Furlano in attack with Zu Munshi, Nigel Hudspith, Julia Johnson and Tammy Kentfield in defence.

A middle distance shot from Furlano got the ball rolling but Mitcham were in confident mood and penalties and long shots from Peter Teague and Steve Johnson helped them into an early 3-7 lead. Croydon's time out had the desired effect as penalties and long shots from Hudspith and Furlano brought them back into the match. Half time score: 9-all and all to play for.

However much like the first team, the 2nd half didn't go the home side's way as cheap goals were conceded. Mitcham knew they were in a match though as Withers' persistence earnt him drop-off, penalty and free-throw goals in the space of 10 minutes. Despite some solid defending by Kentfield she was replaced by Becky Pratt to add some more firepower to the attack. A highlight of the match from a spectator's point of view was the gazelle/bambi-like attempt at a running-in shot by Munshi. However Mitcham continued to put their chances away and despite some highly dubious decisions for both sides, Mitcham ran out 22-14 winners.

Croydon will feel the scoreline didn't really do justice to the performance, however the point-less Croydon will know that if they continue to play in the same vein, their losing streak will come to an end. And in Aquino's swansong for Croydon he failed to score, however it's not all about scoring goals. Ivan will be sorely missed. "What-ever!"

Croydon 3 vs Supernova 2

Unfortunately the third team lost but it was a really close game. Starting in defense was Dan M, Dan P, Becky and (as she answered the phone to my Saturday panic call) Angela Hook. Attack was Mr & Mrs Moore, Chris E and me!

It took a long time for either team to score but Supernova got in first, not to be caught playing catch up Chrissie quickly even the score. We were then left to a stalemate situation. Both teams putting shots up but goals just not occuring. At half time the score was an eventful 3 v 4 to Croydon as Dan P after trying to net the four goals to save his hair cut, succeeded twice! Dan M just could not get any long shots and even missed his running in's. Becky needed to try to put shots up and Angela looked quite good and was shooting too!

Our section was too touchy feely and not in a good way but despite Mick's sad face the ref just didn't care. Not even a penalty! Naughty me should have scored as I had opportunites like Micky tut tut.... In the second half our section did score a long shot care of Chris E and Chrissie managed another too just to keep as in the running of the catch up as Supernova had 7. Angela scored yeah and I'm sure she "will be back". We just couldn't get the ball in the basket and were left without a win boo hoo x.

Croydon 4 vs Bec 3

Bec 3 were a player down but their experience helped them into a first half lead of 3 goals. Persistent fouling on Mick Etheridge lead to two penalty conversions by Simon Mills and Etheridge senior got in on the act with two running-in shots and one from distance. However, despite a long shot from Kathy Dean and two from the returning Steve Pratt, Croydon were not able to keep Bec out and they ran out winners, 8-13.
