Nomads win the relegation battle

Croydon started the new year with a new line-up due to holidays and injuries: Dave Butters, Andy Withers, Sarah George and Anneka Barretto in attack with Ross Carr-Taylor, Paul Jeanes, Marika Barretto and Saskia de Jager in defence. However it was hosts Nomads who started by far the better as they capitalised on Croydon's slow start to race to a 5-0 lead. Croydon came back into the game after a penalty from Jeanes and a long shot from George.

Croydon were clearly concentrating on the attacking of the girls and this policy paid dividends as they put away their chances. However Nomads were able to keep their lead as Croydon were unable to keep the hosts out and continued to concede sloppy goals and the odd penalty. At half time the scores were 2 apart at 10-8.

The 2nd half was a similar affair to the 1st with both sides taking their chances, with 7 minutes remaining Croydon drew level for the first time in the match at 14-all. However Nomads replied instantly and scored two quick goals. Further scores were traded as tempers frayed but Croydon were unable to stop Nomads scoring and two late goals for James Macgowan sealed the match. Final score 20-17.

Croydon will now be looking over their shoulder the rest of the season as they try to avoid a relegation dog-fight. The return match of these sides should decide that but at the moment, Croydon look the most likely for the relegation play-off place.

Nomads 2 vs Croydon 2

Croydon immediately put themselves at a disadvantage as two players did not arrive until 10 minutes into the first half. The remaining team, bolstered by Mike Moore, did well to stay in the game until Dan and Backy Pratt came on with the score at 3-0. Within minutes Croydon had brought themselves level at 4-all but a cruel ankle injury to Becky Pratt robbed them of another player and so the visitors were back to 7 players. The visitors battled on and ended the 1st half at 10-8 with both teams still in the match.

Chris Moore stepped in for Becky Pratt in the 2nd half but Croydon, like many of their recent matches, faded in the 2nd half and only managed to score a further 5 goals. Nomads for their part were steady but unremarkable and so ran out 17-13 winners.

For Croydon the wait for a win this season continues. With a fully fit team Nomads would not hold many fears for Croydon but at present the injury jinx continues. Chris Etheridge, making his debut for the 2nds, has much to learn at this level but he did well and would be pleased with his all-round performance.
