Croydon defeat Castle

Croydon played host to Castle at Royal Russell School in a low key battle in the Premier division. Castle have struggled since their promotion and this game was no different.

Croydon started like they meant business scoring 5 goals with their first 7 shots to race to a 5-0 lead inside 5 minutes with goals from Carla Smith, Steve Jones, Paul Jeanes and a free pass from Saskia de Jager. Castle got into the match with a couple of long shots but Croydon steamed on and after 15 minutes were into a 10-4 lead after another goal from Smith. The game was effectively over before half time as the visitors called an early time out at 13-6. The break did nothing to break the monotony though as Marika Barretto fired in a long shot and Jones ran in for another. Castle replied with a Chris Crafter free pass but a Ross Carr-Taylor drop off and running in shot from Anneka Barretto ended the half 17-9 in Croydon's favour. 28 goals in 30 minutes, clearly a match for the sparse but partisan home crowd to enjoy.

The 2nd half started well for Croydon with 2 goals from Carr Taylor but Castle continued to plug away and Claire Crafter took advantage of some sloppy Croydon play to find the basket on several occasions. A penalty miss from Croydon didn't help and whilst the result was never in doubt, the hosts started to get frustrated. Zu Munshi came on for Jeanes and the new comer wasn't quick to settle in. A long shot from Dave Butters got the score moving at 25-13 but it was Castle who scored the next 3 goals as they finished the game strongly. A final goal before the whistle from Carr Taylor finished off the match at 27-17.

Despite winning, Croydon will not have quite achieved the morale boost they were looking for after such an electric start. Castle will travel back pleased for once to have scored so many and to have not let the score get too far away from them, however the relegation trap door is steadily opening up beneath them.

Croydon 2 fold against Bec 2

Croydon started slowly with Bec sprinting into a 2 goal lead but a free pass from Julia Johnson brought the visitors back into the game and two penalties and a running in shot from Lynda Barker brought the teams level at 4-all. Bec were playing an expansive long ball game with a very tight front defence under the tutelage of Dave Synott and these tactics was paying dividends as they created chance after chance. Croydon weren't helped by captain Andy Withers, missing several free-passes which he would normally expect to put away. Croydon did pinch a couple of late goals though to bring the teams level at half time 7-all.

Croydon have folded in the 2nd half in all their matches this season but two early goals from Joe Furlano and Barker looked to be changing this pattern. However Bec immediately scored their next two chances and another two to pull out a lead and from then on Croydon stopped playing. A long shot from Tammy Kentfield brought some hope but Bec's shooting and passing strategy was far superior and they managed to increase their lead to 4. Nigel Hudspith was brought on for Dan Pratt but despite some early chances he wasn't able to turn the match decisively in Croydon's favour and with the slight assistance of some interesting referee-ing decisions Bec deservedly held on to claim a 16-11 win.

Croydon 3 vs West London 1

Another starting line up for the third team, but was it going to be a winning one against West London? In attack first were Nigel Hudspith, Becky Pratt and Mick and Chrissie Moore, in defense were Patrick Blake, Andy Burnham, Leah Palfreyman and Lorna Elliott.

Not a good start with poor defence as two goals were let in. Patrick was needed to save our catch game and scored a running in shot and then Andy earned a penalty that Lorna converted - level pegging and all change. Chrissie, always the helpful, scored a running in shot and poor defence by us (again) left us even pegging (again). The game continued in this manner with shots going up but they just weren't going in, same old story...

The end result was a boring draw of 8 / 8. Our thanks to Bobby Allen the ref, who listened to the complaints, not that it was our side complaining - we love him!
