Mitcham 1 see off Croydon 1

Mitcham hosted neighbours Croydon at Trinity School, Croydon in the BKA National League. Mitcham have held sway over their visitors in recent years and today was to be no different in the end despite a very even first half. Croydon had Paul Jeanes and Andy Withers in for the injured Steve Jones and Dan Moore but were otherwise at full strength. Mitcham's strength in depth is the best in the league but they were able to call upon their settled 1st team line-up.

Croydon were keen to make a fast start after their match against Nottingham and did just that with a running in shot from Carla Smith. Not all defences in the National League have yet to see Smith in action and Mitcham were caught out a number of times in the game by her interceptions. Mitcham were soon on the 'sheet themselves though with a dubious penalty award for Steve Green. Mitcham scored the next 2 goals but were pegged back by a wide open running in shot from Paul Jeanes. At the other, Mitcham were struggling to break Croydon down but Withers conceded a soft penalty for kicking the ball away which Green again converted. Dave Butters had his shooting boots on though and the first of 3 long shots rained in. Captain Anna Jeanes also scored from behind the back and Mitcham were forced into a time-out with the teams at 4-all.

Mitcham responded with long shots from Sam Wells and Karen Sparrow but Croydon were taking their chances with Butters scoring the 2nd of his long shots and a fluent Ross Carr-Taylor netting a running-in shot to leave the game wide open at 7-6 at the break.

The next fews goals would clearly be crucial and it was the hosts who found these as Steve Green netted two running in shots and with further goals from Sparrow, the game was ebbing away from Croydon. Marika Barretto replaced Kim Jones early on and added some height to the division with some good collects but Croydon were unable to stop Mitcham from scoring as more penalties were converted by Ross Bower. Tempers were flaring on both sides as some interesting decisions were given by referee Lewis but it was Saskia de Jager who was penalised and shown a yellow for something said at a re-taken free-pass. Withers was replaced by Moore with 10 minutes remaining but the game was gone as Dave Synott netted two calm long shots to bring Mitcham to 16-8. More dubious penalties were awarded for both sides to keep the scores ticking over but as time ran out Mitcham were comfortable winners at 18-10.

In reality, the current Croydon side would not normally expect to beat the current Mitcham side, especially lacking talisman Steve Jones, so they will take heart from their first half display. Mitcham are a good side and are difficult to peg back for a full 60 minutes so when Croydon stopped scoring their hosts were able to push on and secure the points.

Mitcham 2 bully Croydon 2

Much like the 1st teams, Mitcham 2 have had comfortable victories against Croydon 2 in recent seasons with one notable exception but this exception was not to be repeated today. Croydon brought in Gary Heath for Paul Jeanes and Dan Moore was fit enough to start the game. Lynda Barker was relegated to the subs by the return of Marika Barretto. Croydon started slowly and soon found themselves 4-0 down. In a dull first half, Mitcham weren't at their best but their goals were only interrupted by 2 penalties from captain Nigel Hudspith, the last before half time, leaving the teams 7-2 at the break.

The second half was no better as Mitcham showed their supremacy with goals all around the team and Croydon unable to respond. Croydon's passing was their biggest weakness as Mitcham picked off lax passes and delivered the ball back to their attack. Croydon scored two further penalties as the game wore on but Mitcham were already celebrating by that stage. Final score: 15-4.

The visitors were missing some key players but they did not put up enough of a fight considering the experience and ability of the team on the pitch. The hard work starts here.

Mitcham 3 vs Croydon 3

The thirds had their second match and following on from last season had a new starting line up. the team was looking good and as the score shows was pretty goooood too. (Mind you mitcham did have one girl short but hey we will just concentrate on a WIN !!!)

Starting in attack was Lynda, Grace (1st appearance for us), Andy (who is looking to do lots of appearances for us) and Dave (1st appearance too). leaving super strong defence of Dave smith, Chris E, Becky and I.

Not being slow off the mark I quickly called myself as the girl not to have the defender as i'm always into saving energy if possible! First half we will skim as there's some confusion over how it went. I believe we did let the first goal in (Dave's opponent was in super form, he even scored later on with his eyes shut-or so dave said!) Our attack scored so it was all change. In attack it took us a while to sort out that only I should be at the post, even with all the helpful shouts from the side line. End score at half time 4 all so I thought Becky and I should stay as we were as finally as a four we were begining to play the mitcham 3.

Ok here I have to backtrack and say that at the start of the game I told Dave (as in new guy) that as a first game he didn't have to score a hat trick we only accepted 5 goals as a starting game. (Grace was excused as she had played outside). When I asked Chris to back this up, he said what followed by I don't think I've ever scored 5 goals... well hello, it was just chatting, as I do like to do. Ok so remembering that, in the second half, as I wrote earlier, our section was beginning to get our act together and even though Dave Smith's guy was on fire with his scoring I am pleased to write that Chris's subconcious must have heard as he scored 5, yes, 5. Lynda had also warmed up by the second half and scored 3 and that really is all I can write about the game. I don't think there were any penalties, everyone seemed in good spirits and we won, yeah. So well done to all of us, I hope everyone enjoyed their game, end result was 13 to us and 7 to mitcham.

Thanks everyone and remember to be available, Lorna X
