Mitcham 1 comfortably beat Croydon 2 to ensure their place in the quarter finals

After 2 good wins in the first round, Croydon 2 were rewarded with a home tie against league and cup favourites, Mitcham 1. Croydon 2 had Paul Jeanes and Andy Withers back to bolster the team a little, whilst Mitcham had their full line-up with the exception of one relative newcomer.

Mitcham started quickly with running in shots from Karen Sparrow and Steve Green but Sarah George earnt Croydon a penalty and Nigel Hudspith's conversion meant the hosts were on the board at 1-3. Mitcham continued to press and to take their chances and were soon 5 goals to the good but Mitcham's concentration was lacking as a clever feint from George and a simple shot from under the post from a free-pass from Jeanes brought Croydon back into the game at 3-6. However Mitcham were not to be denied and further goals from Green, Sparrow and Ross Bower further extended their lead before Julia Johnson and Withers got in on the act. Mitcham ended the half with an Ella Wright running in shot but would surely have not been happy with the 6-14 scoreline.

As Mitcham's frustration rose, Jeanes clearly got under Green's skin as he recorded his second penalty miss for the match. Indeed the Mitcham players showed little grace in victory as they fought to extend their lead further and, it must be said, some of them go down easy for big guys. Grace Stimpson came on for Johnson in the second half, as did Zu Munshi for Jeanes as Croydon looked to rotate their squad. Coach, Ross Carr Taylor, managed to confuse the visitors for a short period with a switch to rebound defence but Mitcham adapted and by the end were coasting - even Dean Woods managed to score from distance.
