Rebound defence restores some pride

Croydon took on Trojans in the BKA National League with both teams with something to play for. Croydon started poorly and Trojans raced to an easy 0-5 lead before Anneka Barretto got the hosts started with a goal from distance. Trojans were in control though and by the end of the half had extended their lead to 5-15 as they capitalised on Croydon's most lacklustre half of the season.

Changes were needed for the hosts at half time and they opted for a switch to rebound defence. This paid dividends as Trojans initially lost all fluidity in their attack. However they still found the net from distance and it was left to a second half hat-trick from Ross Carr-Taylor to bring some pride back to Croydon. The teams traded goals in the 2nd half as neither side was able to assert much control on their opponents. Final score 13-24.

Croydon restored some pride narrowly losing the 2nd half after switching their defence, however Trojans had the game won by then and were clear victors in this match.

Oh and the ref was great

Becky plays a blinder

Croydon 2 took on Trojans 2 at Royal Russell looking for revenge after a last gasp defeat away at Trinity. And revenge they got. The game was painfully slow at the start with only 3 goals scored in the first 10 minutes, 2 for the hosts from Nigel Hudspith and Dan Pratt. Coach Ross Carr-Taylor clearly wanted to liven things up and his time-out worked as Grace Stimpson scored a couple of typical snapshots from distance and Hudspith netted the 2nd of his 4. This left the teams at 5-2 at the break.

Trojans were straight back into the match though at the start of the 2nd half with 2 quick goals but Hudspith kept the scoreboard ticking over. Trojans were not to be denied though and took the lead for the first time in the match at 7-8 and then at 8-9. Lynda Barker seemed to be rejuvenated by a knock on the head and soon after scored a snapshot. However it was Becky Pratt who stole the limelight. She had already had a solid game with some good battling under the post but crucially she firstly restored parity with a flick from under the post and then nailed the last 2 goals of the game to leave Croydon 12-10 ahead.

So near for the 3rds

The 3rds had Nomads 3 who by all accounts had kicked our butts on the last encounter. Sections were Jane, Angela, Vernon and we love him Paul Andrews (he had just finished playing the 4ths game and was asked, very nicely, but not allowed to refuse, to play for the 3rds) leaving Andy, Mick, Chrissie and me.

Unfortunately we got down to a poor start and Nomads went off with a flying one, I could be wrong but I'm sure we were losing 5 - 0 but did manage to find the inside of the basket yeah, and who do you think it was? Paul! A lovely drop off come mid range shot, well done that man and just the thing to get the rest of us scoring. The game then became close and even got to us being just one behind! Jane's section all managed a goal each in some form or other and our section I must admit Chrissie and I did not score but we must be good assists as Mick scored 4 and Andy 5 (1 was my penalty but I confess to not practising one before the game so felt not allowed to take it!)

I really enjoyed the game even though my ankle was shooting pains every so often but I had a good chat (oops) and I think everyone else enjoyed themselves too, which is what the game is all about.

Final score was 13 - 16 but we had a bloodly good go at it

4ths triumph

The 4ths took on Trojans 3 at Royal Russell with a cunning double father and daughter combination in defence with Steve and Becky Pratt paired with Jon and Kathy Dean whilst the attack featured Smithy, Paul Andrews, Emma Butters and Becky Dean. And triumph they did with Smithy grabbing the headlines with a foursome but Pratt senior and Paul Andrews nabbing one each
