Norwich City 1 vs Croydon 1

After an early night... followed by a curry, lager, lager, lager and some fruit-based drinkies for the ladies, Croydon turned out for the match against Norwich City. They fielded the same line-up as the previous day with batman and robin, Butters and Otter, continuing their new crime-fighting partnership with Grace Stimpson and Becky Pratt supporting. The Croydon defence featured Gary Heath, Andy Withers, Anna Jeanes (c) and Jane Belfourd. City fielded a young, mostly teenage side, lacking a bit of height.

Croydon approached the game with a solid resolve with maximum respect for the opposition and started well with a goal from their first attack as Butters flew in and Otter dropped off, a few minutes later it was the same story as Otter dropped off from a Pratt shot. Croydon were buzzing now and, despite a few misses, Jeanes punched a long range effort in, closely followed by another from Heath and Croydon eased to a 4 goal lead after 15 minutes.

Otter was in fine fettle and banged in another two from range. Croydon were applying the thumb screws in defence and hassling City into dozens of passing errors as their heads dropped. Jeanes finished off a fine first half with another long one and a cheeky one hander under the post. Half time: 0-8.

Both teams made changes at half time with Croydon's Zu Munshi and Becky Tobitt coming on for Heath and Pratt. City started the second period with a bit more purpose and managed a few over the back passes to give them some rare shooting opportunities. Indeed captain Jeanes gave away a blatant penalty which City lapped up to break their duck and destroy Croydon's clean sheet. However Otter was moving his large frame all over and as Butters drove in hard, he freed the Toight Dutchman for another back-spinning drop shot. Jeanes earnt Croydon a penalty, Withers converted and Munshi got in on the act with a goal from the feed. With Butters playing a very unfamiliar support role, he didn't bat an eyelid as Otter purred in another from distance, before turning provider for the Caped Crusader.

As far as scoring was going it was pretty much the Otter and Jeanes show as the captain fooled her defender and scored from behind the back of the post. There was still time for Belfourd to run in, Withers to concede a (missed) penalty and Otter to leave the game, and the club, with a final bomb from downtown.

Frankly there was only one team in this game. Croydon approached the game with the right attitude and showed a killer instinct in dispatching a City side, who tried hard but were completely stifled. For Croydon it was a great send off for the big guy but the two Norwich games were won in defence: conceding 5 goals in 2 games (2 from open play) is a fine achievement for any team and they seem to have found the right balance in attack.
