Croydon 1 vs Norwich Knights

First Division champs, Croydon, took on play-off hopefuls, Norwich Knights, at Royal Russell school in a match that clearly had more riding on it for the visitors than the home side. Croydon started with an unchanged line-up with player-coach Dave Butters again consigning himself to the sidelines. Knights had a full complement of boys to choose from this time and so had changed divisions compared to the last time these teams played.

Croydon started in steady fashion with Anna Jeanes scoring after a penetrating run from Jane Belfourd and Andy Withers followed up with one from down town. However Knights were quickly back in the game as a girl and then Ross Lenton scored the first of a few in the first half. Jeanes was flying though at this stage and scored a sweet one from long range but Knights continued to peg the champions back and it was left to a Nigel Hudspith penalty to restore Croydon's narrow lead. Knights called an early time out and restarted the match with a long shot but Jeanes and Withers were again on target and Croydon were getting some rhythm going as Hudspith added another penalty and Grace Stimpson scored a rare running in shot. The zippy Ellis scored a short sharp chance which Belfourd cancelled out and Lenton scored again to bring the scores to 9-6. Croydon's defensive section started to fall apart at this stage though with balls going everywhere as risky passes failed to come off as much as the mundane ones. Butters called a late time out to take the sting out of the Knights attack and this seemed to work as they missed a vital penalty and the half time whistle went at 9-6.

Becky Pratt gave Croydon a great start to the 2nd half with a long shot but substitute George Buttinger scored from the back of the basket after Hudspith and Zu Omar switched. Gary Heath had had a quiet game until then but again prevailed in a 1-on-1 attack and scored from distance to restore Croydon's 4 goal lead. Knights needed something special now and called a time-out with 20 minutes to go. Lenton scored from distance but they were again penalised down the other end and a calm Hudspith stroked the penalty. However the game was not over as Croydon conceded 2 quick penalties. Coach Butters called a further time out with 8 minutes remaining as Croydon's attack was faltering badly by this stage as passes hit legs, feet, opponents etc and shots went up but weren't going in. The defensive section held strong for long periods but eventually Jeanes conceded a running in shot and then a penalty and the scores were suddenly level with 2 minutes to go. Could Knights pull ahead for the first time in the match? Sadly for them, no. Croydon had one last attack and Withers again fed Belfourd and substitute Mikeal Martins was harshly adjudged to have fouled in the feed. Heath stepped up and coldly slotted the penalty. Before Knights could muster an attack the final whistle went, 13-12.

Knights certainly wanted it more and were clearly on the up during the 2nd half but they never quite recovered from a 4 goal deficit in the 1st half when Croydon were really purring; indeed they can't argue with the result given they were never ahead in the match. Knights have certainly been a force this season and one hopes this young, energetic team can soon fulfill their potential and gain promotion to the big time as they deserve. For Croydon, a near faultless, in terms of results, season in BKA First Division comes to a close. There were certainly ups and downs along the way but the team battled when they needed to and pulled out the big performances at the right time. Indeed the reverse fixture of this game in Norwich was a key moment in this season and one they might look back on it as season-defining for both teams.

Croydon 2 vs Kingfisher 2

Croydon 2 took on rock bottom Kingfisher 2 at Royal Russell school. They sported Dave Butters in for Joe Furlano to bolster one division's experience considerably but were otherwise unchanged.

Mitcham 3 vs Croydon 3

The 3rds had Mitcham 3 away and due to a lack of ref the game was started late and we had to play a shorter game arrh what a shame ha ha. Thank you to Mike Humphreys for stepping in.

In attack was Emma with Mick and staying in the side Steph and returning to the side Pete (and he brought the whole family, yeah. Would this have an effect on his game? Read on to find out). Defence being Andy and myself with Zoe staying in the team and Dave Hall who goes Tuesday night training but hasn't played any, yes, any games this season. Oh blimey we had to win really what with families and the honour Dave of playing.

So the Mitcham side was a mix of old faces and new young ones. But we came out strong and did our usual good passing and the ball was going through the basket!! Yes we were scoring goals as if it was as easy as slicing bread (is that a saying? Well it is now and thinking about it bread can be hard to cut at times and it wasn't all easy...)

It was lots of goals to us and much less to them. I am very pleased to say that the thirds just continued to play and not go for the killer work on the weakest link like some teams as the sport should progress and who likes to lose by loads of goals... Most of the goals were from long shots that didn't beat around the basket in and out! done! Only two Croydon players didn't score: Andy who luckily was taken out by Mike but didn't come off but maybe it was all the painkillers keeping him playing and Steph who needs to shout when free (even though it does somewhat give the game away)!

MPV is going to be Pete as he was doing a Dan Moore impression - left, right, up and down. hmm was that for the family? And have you ever scored 3 goals in a Croydon game? The Lindsey family are invivted to the last game of the season...!

Well done one and all. I hope you all enjoyed, it was good to play etc etc xxx
