Croydon 3 dominate Nomads 3

Croydon 3 travelled to Epsom for a very early throw off starting with Lorna Elliot, PC Furlano, Paul Andrews and Andy Burnham in attack, Karen James, Sue Baker, Steve Palfreyman and Paul Jeanes in defence.

Nomads started with 7 players as one of their girls was running late and they put the short section in to attack. Despite the early start it was Croydon who looked brightest and took the lead with Mandy scoring a long shot.

Croydon doubled their lead soon after with Lorna also scoring from distance, Nomads looked like they were still in bed and Croydon made them pay, adding another 2 goals both scored by Paul J, the first a nice shot from long range and then he converted a penalty after some neat attacking play from Susan.

Nomads had a chance to pull the scores back after they were awarded a free pass but they failed to make the most of the chance. Croydon on the other hand were in a rampant mood and continued to pile the misery on Nomads with Andy and Paul A both getting on the score sheet with good middle distance shots. Croydon at this point were cruising at 6-0 and looked like they took their foot off the pedal, allowing Nomads to score to make the scores 6-1.

Croydon's attacking didn't suffer though as Steve scored a lovely drop off goal after a great pass from Paul J. Andy grabbed his 2nd of the game with a long shot moments after and it looked like it was game over before half time.

Nomads missing girl turned up at this point and now both sides had their full quota of players. It proved to be influential as Nomads began to attack with more confidence creating more chances and it paid off when they scored from a drop off shot to make it 8-2 and Nomads were looking like they could turn it around. Unfortunately for Nomads though the half time whistle blew and both teams had the chance to talk things over.

After the break it was Croydon once again who got things off to a good start with Paul J scoring another penalty. Nomads though were starting attacking fluently and looked more dangerous than Croydon and the goals proved this, Nomads scoring 4 unanswered goals, two long shots, a running in shot and then scoring from a free throw to bring the scores to 9-6 and the hosts were looking to try and claw their way back into the game.

Croydon sensed the danger of an upset and after leading by so many they were determined not to go home without all the points. They cooled Nomads revival when Paul J burst past his player to score a running in shot. Lorna killed the game off shortly after scoring with a long shot to make the scores 11-6 in the visitor's favour. With time winding down Croydon looked to settle and just coast the final few minutes and Nomads took the oppurtunity to make the scores a little more respectable pulling two back in the last moments of the game to leave the scores at 11-8 to Croydon.

Croydon 3 gained their first victory of the season and really dominated Nomads with the score being slightly flattering to the hosts. Lets hope they can carry on from here and start moving up the table.

Croydon 4 battle to a win over Scorpions

Croydon 4 travelled to Raynes Park to take on Scorpions in the evening fixture. Despite the late start Croydon were ready to go, well, except for Sarah Hole who found out the hard way that there is more than one Bushey Road in the area.

So Croydon started with Karen James in the hope that Sarah would soon turn up. Joining Karen in attack was Jess Parsons, Jon Dean and Steve Pratt. In defence was Becki and Dan Pratt, Becky Dean, and Andrew Lam.

Croydon didn't get off to the greatest start, with Dan giving away silly passes and the attack bunching around the post. Scorpions were on top early on and they made Croydon pay by scoring first after a dubious penalty decision against Becky D. Scorpions doubled their lead with a long shot, and it looked as though the game could could slip away from Croydon early.

The change of ends seemed to shake things up, and Croydon's attack looked in fine form. Dan worked well with sibling Becki to set her up for a running in shot, which she scored with ease. The good work continued and in defence Croydon were shutting Scorpions down giving the attack more time to create the chances. After Becki ran past her defender, Dan faked the pass to leave him with a shot from next to the post, and he brought the scores to level at 2 all.

Croydon were nevertheless getting frustrated and were directing it at the referee. This is never goes to go down well, and it took some words to calm things down. In attack, Croydon were finding it hard to create space, but Jess was fouled under the post to give Croydon the chance to take the lead, but Steve could not finish.

Not long after, Croydon won another penalty and Steve stepped up again but missed for the second time. Scorpions were close a couple of times, but neither team could take the lead before half time. Some words at the break seemed to refocus the visiting team and they took to the pitch relaxed and smiling.

With the second half under way Croydon's attack was working together much better than in the first half, with Jess and Jon doing really well in collect and giving themselves more possession which helped to create more chances. Sarah won a penalty after being defended by a boy - ironic given she made the same mistake last week.

With Steve having missed the previous two penalties, it was no suprise that calls were made for Jon to take this one. He didn't disappoint, cooly scoring from the line to give Croydon the lead for the first time in the match.

It didn't last long though as Scorpions levelled with a long shot to make it 3-3. With the switch Croydon's strongest attack came in and they hoped to give Croydon some breathing space. That they did when Dan scored a beautiful long shot, and Becki put daylight between the teams also scoring a good long range effort. With the scores at 5-3 Croydon seemed to know they should win the game and it showed; they dominanted in defence, limiting Scorpions to single shot attacks, thereby giving the attack plenty of opportunity to get some more goals.

Jon was causing Scorpions problems collecting, and he managed to set up Jess who was no more than a metre away who scored her first goal of the season to put Croydon 3 in front.
Scorpions weren't finished though and added another goal but it wouldn't change the outcome as Croydon controlled possesion for the last minutes and closed the game out to win 6-4.
