Lack of sharpness costs Croydon 1 against Bec 1

Croydon hosted Bec at Royal Russell for the first time this season with a new-look line-up: Andy Withers, Dan Pratt, Grace Stimpson and Lorna Elliott in attack, Dave Butters, Pete Lindsey, Sarah Withers and captain Anna Jeanes in defence.

Croydon got off to a poor start with passes going astray and loose balls being gobbled up by their opponents and so Bec raced quickly to a 4-goal lead after 5 minutes. Finally Croydon woke up as Pratt scored a penalty and then tricked his player under the post. Lindsey was in his prime under the post and forced Tom brady into conceding a penalty. Butters converted and Jeanes beat her player to bring the scores level at 4-all.

Having got back into the game, Croydon weren't able to make it stick though as Sarah Withers conceded a running in shot and Bec's Ironmonger converted a free-pass chance. Croydon were battling hard and putting plenty of shots up but Bec scored 2 more before half time without reply to leave the scores 4-8 to the visitors.

It was crucial that Croydon got off to a flyer in the 2nd half but much like the 1st they lacked focus, gave the ball away and were soon two more down and it started looking ominous for the hosts. Jeanes scored from distance but Bec's girls were starting to impose themselves and they scored the next three goals to leave the visitors well ahead at 5-13. Butters scored from a rare cross-field ball but Croydon's heads seem to drop as Bec started to score more freely and race to a 6-18 lead.

Croydon did show some fighting spirit though as Elliott scored a drop-off and Andy Withers turned his man in the feed but again Bec replied with 2 of their own. Pratt scored the last goal of the match with a drop-off but the result wasn't in doubt for much of the 2nd half.

Croydon 2's attack falters against Bec 2

Croydon 2 took on Bec 2 with Ed Chaney, Vernon Ellis, Zoe Shewell and Julia Johnson in attack, Zak Omar, Karen James, Jane Belfourd and captain Adam Champion in defence. The game started well with Chaney dropping off and scoring a simple goal. Bec replied soon after, however from then on both teams were bogged down in attack with Chaney doing some great intercepting. It took until the 11th minute for Bec to get their 2nd and a further 6 minutes for their 3rd with Ingmar Evers dropping off nicely.

Croydon called a time-out but the remaining 8 minutes of the half were much the same as before and the scorer was only troubled for a penalty against Champion. Half time: 1-4.

Bec made the most of the half time team talk and scored a few goals before calling a time-out at 1-7. Croydon's defence was in fine fettle and keeping the visitors at bay but the attack was lacking in fluidity and Chaney's shots kept rattling the basket and coming out. 10 minutes later and only one more goal to Bec and another time-out to the visitors was called. Again this seemed to make little difference as both defences continued to keep the goals out. After a titantic 15 minutes of attacking Ellis finally scored from distance and the teams changed round but Croydon let a goal in immediately which kind of summed up a strange match. Final score: 2-9, a good one for the insomniacs.

Croydon 4 fall well short against Nomads 4

Croydon 4 hosted Nomads 4 at Royal Russell, with Sarah Hole running late Karen James, Steve Chadd and Luke James started as a section of 3 in defence, Jon Dean (c), Russell Comber, Kathy Dean and Hayley Rand were in attack.

It was the visitors who got off to the better start, scoring from a controversial penalty that set the tone for the rest of the match, Croydon soon found themselves further behind with a running in shot and a goal from behind the post to make it 3-0. Croydon gave away another penalty to make things worse and a quick succession of goals left Croydon with a mountain to climb at 7-0.

The hosts although they found it tough creating scoring chances were showing they still wanted the ball, with Jon and Russell getting some interceptions, the extra possession wasn't taken advantage of though and Nomads had another penalty, they scored from the spot and 2 goals from distance distanced the visitors.

Sarah finally made it through the traffic 5 minutes before half time but that couldn't stem Nomad's attack and they scored a running in shot and another penalty before half time to leave the scores at 12-0.

Croydon were hoping it wouldn't be another game they failed to score in and looked to improve in the second half. The arrival of Sarah had given Croydon a boost and the players looked a little more confident, finding space for shots and eventually it paid off with Jon scoring from long range to get the hosts underway. It was cancelled out by a Nomads running in shot, and Nomads had the chance to score again but failed to score from the spot.
Sarah managed to get on the scoresheet with another shot from distance and could of had a few more but was narrowly missing from drop off shots.

Croydon were looking to win the second half and were doing well to keep out the visitors but a mistake in defence led to yet another penalty and this time Nomads took the chance.
Nomads scored again minutes before the full time whistle and it proved to be the last goal of the game leaving the score 15-2.

The score looks bad but Croydon can take heart from their performance in the second half, hopefully they can build on the performance and next time out get their first win of the season.
