Croydon 1 thumped by Mitcham 1

Croydon hosted local rivals Mitcham in what was once a battle at the top end of the table. In recent years this has become a less equal tussle and so the scoreline showed by the end of this game. Croydon coach Butters, rested himself and mixed things up with Anna Jeanes (c), Dan Pratt, Andy Withers and Lorna Elliott in attack and Zak Omar, Grace Stimpson, Jane Belfourd and Pete Lindsey in defence.

Mitcham got off to a flyer, asserting themselves all over the court and racing to a 0-5 lead inside 8 minutes. Croydon called a time-out to settle the ship and this they did but the score worsened for the hosts until Omar dropped off to open their scoring at 1-7 after 17 minutes. Omar was having a great battle with Ross Bower and putting up lots of shots but despite some good recycling the ball wasn't falling for Croydon while Mitcham could barely miss. Elliott eventually followed up with a running in shot but after another penalty Mitcham were 3-10 up with 2 minutes left. They called a time-out but nothing more came of the half.

Croydon started the 2nd half well - they kept their opponents out for long periods but they couldn't find the basket themselves and eventually Mitcham eeked out some goals and were 3-14 up with 15 minutes left. Stimpson was replaced by Hannah Evans and then Withers by Ed Chaney. The subs did well but couldn't stem the tide as Mitcham took advantage to score 4 quick goals in the last 5 minutes. Final score: 3-19.

The scoreline is quite damning for the home side but for 15 minutes they gave as much as they got and fought well. Shame the game is played over 60 minutes then!

Croydon 2 thumped by Mitcham 2

Croydon 2 took on Mitcham 2 for the 3rd time this season with the similar side to last time. Mitcham's girls got their side going early on but a free-pass from Karen James and a Vernon Ellis shot sharp shot got Croydon into the game at 2-3. At this point though Mitcham pulled away and eventually secured a 2-8 lead before Chaney scored from distance and James scored from downtown. Chaney, the raging bull, was having a fine game as he charged around the court but to little avail. Half time: 4-9.

Mitcham's Peter Teague scored to start the half after some slack marking by his opponent. Meanwhile Johnson was having a titantic battle with Carly Holness, using her guile and speed to mostly stay with her opponent. Holness did get the better of her with a very neat, balanced shot from middle distance though and followed it up with a running in shot but it was pleasing to see Johnson trying so hard and giving her all for the team. In general, Croydon's defence was more solid in the 2nd half but they never really threatened to open the goal-scoring floodgates and finished the game with only the 1 goal for the half after a Ben Hale long-shot went in despite Holness clattering the post with her head - quite bizarre but they all count! Final score: 5-15.
