"Grudge Match" ends in draw

Croydon 2 were hosts to Croydon 1 this weekend in the LKA Regional League. No current member of the club could remember any other time when the two teams had met in a competitive league match, and anticipation was high for the event.

Matches at training sessions had indicated that there wasn't a lot to choose between the teams, and this was proved correct.

Croydon 1 lined up with captain Anna Jeanes, Grace Stimpson, Andy Withers and Vernon Ellis, whilst coach Dave Butters, Zak Omar, Hannah Evans and Sarah Withers lined up in defence. Croydon 2 had Karen James, Dan Pratt, Ben Hale and Lorna Elliott in attack, Pete Lindsey, Adam Champion (c), Zoe Shewell and Becki Pratt in defence.

It was Croydon 2 who got off to the best start with James dropping off, then Omar was tricked by Pratt for a one-hander from the feed and a few minutes later Lindsey scored from distance: 3-0 after 5 minutes played. Croydon 1 rallied briefly with a running in shot from Omar but Hale scored from way downtown as Croydon 2 restored their early 3 goal lead. The 1sts rallied again though, this time with runners from A Withers and H Hale and a 5 metre shot from Omar: 4-all and all to play for.

It was here that the 1sts should have kicked on but D Pratt beat Butters for a running-in shot before Withers scored from long range but Lindsey got his own back and scored the penalty he won after neatly cutting across Withers as he ran in. 6-5 at half time.

Croydon 1 were making plenty of chances and recycling the ball well at times but they couldn't make the most of the space they were creating by getting the ball in the basket. S Withers scored a running in shot early in the 2nd half and Ellis scored a drop-off to give the 1sts their first lead in the match but after Ellis missed a penalty, D Pratt and Lindsey made no mistake with their's and the 2nds were back in front. S Withers dropped off and Ellis scored from distance but with time running out B Hale scored from distance again and Lindsey scored a 3rd penalty. Butters levelled things again but D Pratt scored a beauty from distance. Ellis scored the last of the match with a drop off before the time ran out.

The final score 11-11 was a fair reflection of the match, but it leaves the Croydon 1 coach and players much to think about in terms of tactics, selection and preparation. Croydon 2 should take great heart from their performance and the result for the rest of the season.

Croydon 4 play Highbury in friendly

Croydon 4 took on a mixed ability Highbury. The visitors had forfeited the match earlier in the week as they were unable to field a legal team but were keen to play a friendly so the result was a 10-0 win for Croydon but they still had the chance to play a game.

Highbury were short of girls so to make the match able to go ahead Karen James offered to play as a boy for Croydon as Mike Lavine was running late. So alongside her/him were Charlotte Feakins and Dave Smith in defence, whilst Hayley Rand, Luke James, captain Jon Dean and debutant Deborah Wyatt were in attack.

The game began and it took some time for the hosts to get their heads around the various match ups, who was shooting and who was not allowed to shoot against Highbury’s 6 players. The confusion let the more experienced Highbury side able to find gaps in Croydon’s defences and were very quickly 3-0 up before the hosts could get their focus. Croydon began to fight back and created some good chances but were unable to find the back of the net. Mike found his way to the hall and this meant Karen James could go back to her usual gender role and play as a girl again, unfortunately even the full team couldn’t stop Highbury and they let in another couple of goals before half time.

With the break the sections were changed slightly with Karen James swapping with Hayley Rand, the swap seemed to work as Hayley opened the scoring with a neat shot from mid range, Highbury added another before Mike Lavine crashed his way onto the scoreboard with a long distance goal, it wasn’t enough to change the match as Highbury scored freely, adding to their total to finish the game 11-2.

Croydon won’t get disheartened as they were playing a very organised, talented Highbury team and they still took all the points from the weekend, leaving them at this stage with a 100% record intact and remain the only Croydon team with maximum points this season.
