Croydon 1's disciplined attack and stifling defence stumps Mitcham 2

Croydon took on local rivals Mitcham 2 with Dan Pratt, Zak Omar, Hannah Evans and Grace Stimpson in attack, Andy Withers, Anna Jeanes (c), Vernon Ellis and jane Belfourd in defence. Mitcham has some experience in Peter Teague, Craig Gosling and Sam Wells but otherwise featured their latest crop of youth team graduates.

The game was close in the first 10 minutes with both teams making chances but failing to take them with a free pass miss from Omar and a penalty miss from Gosling. Stimpson got the first goal though as the ball fell to her right under the post and she popped it in without hesitation. Ellis was a bit loose on his player though and was made to pay as Mitcham levelled. More free-passes were missed by both teams before Teague stole past Omar to score a runner and Pratt also conceded a running-in shot and suddenly Mitcham were 1-3 up. However Stimpson beat her player and won a penalty (that Pratt converted) and then scored from distance to levels things back up. Pratt was fishing and gave a silly pen for out of hands but Withers won a dubious penalty of his own and the scores were level at 4-all after 18 minutes.

Again Mitcham 2 fought back with Sam Wells winning a penalty and then scoring from distance but Jeanes replied in kind to keep the hosts in the game. Pratt gave his young opponent too much space and Croydon were 2 behind again but Croydon's Scotland international was just about to enter his purple patch as he netted two goals from way down town. Half time: 7-all.

Croydon's defensive section had been focussing on the Mitcham girls relative weakness in the first half with little return but they stuck with it and stuck Ellis under the post as Withers was often being out-collected by Gosling. This policy started to pay dividends, big time. Retaining possession well, Belfourd scored a running in shot and then turned in the feed to give Croydon a lead they would never surrender. Omar scored a neat free-pass and despite a running-in shot for Gosling, Croydon went into over-drive with another goal from Belfourd, a runner from Ellis, a long shot from Stimpson and a penalty from Pratt: 14-8. Pratt had taken on board the feedback to get tighter on his player and he was all over him in the second half, the poor lad didn't get a sniff.

As Mitcham's heads started to drop Croydon ruthlessly continued their disciplined attacking policy and Belfourd scored 2 more simple goals to really put the match to bed. Stimpson wasn't done yet though and scored a dodgy, off-balance one to round off a real goal-fest for Croydon.

Mitcham 2's young team will have better days than this, they rather faded in the second half once they went behind and couldn't get back into it. Croydon will take heart from the result, performance and the goals from the girls in this match but most of all they should remember the discipline that gave them the platform to take their shots and retain possession. Long may it continue.

Croydon 2 hang on to lead to beat Bec 3

Croydon took on Bec 3 at Royal Russell in what was a crucial match at the wrong end of the LKA League 1. Croydon started the brighter with Ed Chaney finding himself free under the basket and as usual he made no mistake with this simple chance. Neither team was able to score for the next few minutes and Karen James had to come off after 10 after she had a slight disagreement with the post. Lynda Barker raced on, pleased as punch, for her 2nd game of the day. Ben Hale scored soon after with a running in shot: 2-0. Bec 3 came back into the match though with 2 goals but Hale scored again and Julia Johnson continued her assassin streak with another running in shot sunk. At half time the score was 4-2 to the hosts.

Ed Chaney was replaced at half time by Mark Irving after Mr Chaney had a date with a comic. It was Pete Lindsey who was seeing the funny side though after tricking his defender in the free-pass for a great score as the yanks say.

Then it started getting hazy... anyone finish this off?
