Second half collapse sends Croydon 2 down

Croydon 2 took on Bec 3 and a vociferous crowd at Ernest Bevan College in the London Regional League relegation decider. The visitors had a much changed line-up with Karen James, Sue Baker, Andy Withers and Mark Irving in attack, Paul Jeanes, Lynda Barker, Zoe Shewell and captain Adam Champion in defence.

Both sides started tentatively but it was Irving who made a break on Liam Clarke and won Croydon a penalty. Withers' attempt tottered around the top of the basket and slipped out though. Next James had a free-pass chance, the first of many in the match, but the goal was disallowed after Bec 3 raced in to defend. So it was Be 3 who opened the scoring with a drop-off after 8 minutes. Irving scored from close range though soon after to restore parity. Champion then showed a captain's eye for goal with a long shot but Clarke scored one of his own. Withers beat his man for a running-in shot but Bec 3 again brought the scores back level again. Jeanes then dropped off after a nice pass from Champion but Clarke again scored from distance. Next it was Bec's turn to miss a pen and Withers made no mistake with his but with seconds remaining again Bec 3 levelled: 5-all at half time.

Croydon started the 2nd half with a penalty miss from Champion but Bec 3 weren't going to miss much in this half and so it flowed with Ironmonger scoring her free-pass, followed by 2 more goals. Withers missed a penalty that might have brought Croydon back into it at 8-5 but Irving made up for it with a long shot straight after. As Bec 3 scored 2 more to stretch to a 10-6 lead, Jeanes called a time-out to steady the ship. Baker scored soon after from a free-pass switch and Croydon had their best chance of rescuing the match at this point. It was not to be though as Bec 3 went into over-drive. Using their subs well they scored 7 unanswered goals in the last 16 minutes while Croydon's increasingly desperate attempts to get back into the match unfortunately led to nil. Final score: 17-7 and Croydon 2 are relegated. A sad finale to the season but the results don't lie and Croydon need to rebuild in London League 2 next season after playing Mitcham 2 on Tuesday.

Croydon 3 still in it at half-time, but then came the second half...

Croydon 3 started their last, no-pressure game of the season with Phil Aish, Andy Forey, Sarah Hole and Stephanie Robinson in first attack, with Andy Burnham, Luke James, Mandy Furlano and Becki Pratt in first defence - or second attack as they like to call it. Andy B captained his last game for CKC before heading off to join the merry men (and ladies) of Nottingham.

We started the nothing to lose game (our destiny was confirmed last week - it's a different league for us next season and not because of promotion) playing well. Phil scored an early long shot and so did Stephanie, but Bec also got on the scoresheet. At half-time it was 3-2 to the home team and still all to play for.

We worked out how to attack the second-half but unfortunately either didn't do much of what we'd planned or Bec got on their game or a bit of both. There were interceptions all over the pitch most of them from Luke who managed to keep Croydon old boy Sean Fellows relatively quiet. Becki managed to sneak in a goal in the second half but Bec managed more than we could. Final score 9-3.

Better luck next season CKC3, hopefully we'll win a couple more games. And all the very best to Andy B and family for their move to Nottingham - see you at our tournie in June Andy!

Croydon 4 in gutsy loss to Nomads 5

Croydon 4 just lost out to a late winner against Nomads 5, with Martin James following in his siblings Karen and Luke’s footsteps and scoring 2 goals on debut.

Croydon also gave a debut to Diane Hart who performed fantastically well; Hart started with Kathy Dean, Dom Bradford and Steve Pratt in attack and got off to the perfect start with a runner from Pratt putting them 1-0 up early in the game. The Croydon first defence comprised of Jon Dean, Mike Lavine, Rhiannon Williams-Clarke and Hayley Rand, unfortunately they couldn’t keep the visitors out and Nomads replied almost immediately with the experienced Lol More scoring with a long shot.

Both teams were creating good scoring opportunities but it was Nomads who started to pull away with another long shot followed by a running in shot to give the visitor’s breathing space at 1-3.
Croydon then were harshly punished for a foul on a shot which looked to be defended, Nomads put home the resulting penalty and looked to be getting away from the hosts.

Croydon though had other ideas and Kathy Dean scored from mid distance before Jon Dean hit a long shot to bring Croydon back to within a goal. With time in the half running out Bradford lost his attacker briefly and in his attempts to get back to defend he fouled his player to give away a more blatant penalty than the previous one. Nomads once again stepped up and scored to end the half at 3-5.

After the break Croydon wanted to get back into the game, looking to score early to put the pressure on their visitors, however another contentious penalty was given against Jon Dean who in any other game would have won a defended decision. Nomads again put the penalty away to stretch their lead once again to three at 3-6. Croydon though looked determined to not let the game pass them by, Bradford had been breezing past his opponent all game but his running in shots had not been falling, this time though Bradford’s amazing circus shot dropped into the basket.

Soon after, Croydon brought on their substitutes, with Becky Dean and Martin James coming on for Williams-Clarke and Lavine. James didn’t take long to stamp his mark on the game, scoring twice from distance to level the game up at 6-6. Croydon now had the crowd and momentum on their side and they continued to find gaps in attack looking to take the lead for the first time since the opening exchanges, they did so with Kathy scoring from long range much to the delight of the home support, scores at 7-6.

The visitors though were not out and they managed to level the scores again with a running in shot to make it 7-7, they forged ahead again with a long shot and the game was really heating up, Rand was finding her range and after hitting the basket on the previous few shots she managed to get her eye in, scoring from close in, Rand has had her best season since joining, getting on the score sheet more regularly. Unfortunately this wasn’t the winner, with only a couple of minutes left in the game Croydon conceded another running in shot to leave it 8-9, despite Croydon going close on numerous occasions threatening the equaliser they so deserved the clock ran out and the game finished with Nomads winning by just the solitary goal.

The fourths have had a great season, being the best team in the club comfortably and producing some great results along the way. Players have put in a lot of effort and deserve to be as high up the table as they are, constantly improving throughout the season with even today’s débutantes producing great performances but sadly they couldn’t produce the perfect end to a great season.

Congratulations to all the players who have played in the 4ths this year and look to build on this season going forward in the next one.
