Croydon 2's season finale ends in defeat against Mitcham 2

Croydon 2 took on Mitcham 2 away at Royal Russell School in Croydon's final game of the 2009/10 season. They started with Sue Baker, Karen James, Andy Withers and Luke James in attack with Lynda Barker, Zoe Shewell, Ed Chaney and captain Adam Champion in defence. Mitcham fielded a mostly inexperienced side but with Peter Teague and Dave Synott calling the shots down each end.

Croydon got off to the best start after a mix-up in the Mitcham defence left L James free from 5 metres and, under pressure, he made no mistake but Teague was soon on the board after Champion over-committed in defending his feed position. Mitcham's Piper then scored from middle distance but Shewell replied immediately. Again Mitcham went ahead but L James again found the basket and the teams were level at 3-all after 13 minutes play. Mitcham then wet 2 goals up but a penalty from Withers after a foul by Piper on James brought Croydon back into it but there was still time for Champion to miss a penalty and Mitcham to stretch their lead to 6-4 at the break.

The hosts started the 2nd half with a penalty from Piper but Champion scored from middle distance. Mitcham then went on a scoring spree - scoring 5 unanswered goals despite coach Jeanes interventions of a time-out to Croydon and Barker being replaced by Steph Robinson. Withers scored from the feed and Champion from a running-in shot but by then Mitcham were home and hosed: 14-7.

Unfortunately another 2nd half stumble for Croydon this season, not helped by yet more missed penalties, but it was a good evening's game and a chance to give L James some match time at this level.
