A promising start to the season for Croydon 3

The middle of November and it was time for Croydon 3s first game of the season. We started with Steve Chadd, Geraint Davies, Lynda Barker and captain Stephanie Robinson in attack; with Simon Mills, Sarah Hole, and in their first game in Croydon colours Victoria Goode and Mark Wright in second attack. Bec scored a long-shot almost straight away in their first attack and as Coach Susan said at half-time "they scored despite Vicky almost having her fingers up her girl's nose" - an unusual technique and perhaps one to practice at home rather than Thursday nights please... We traded goals initially, giving away a couple of penalties but Lynda scored from a stunning free pass and at one point it was 2-2. But Bec scored a couple more and it was 4-2 at half-time.

Coaches Susan and Steve gave us tips on how to up our game, and try we did. Geraint used his peripheral vision as requested and made some interceptions. Simon (recovering from deadly man-flu and at the start of his own korfball marathon day) used our trusty favourite move and scored three drop off shots against Croydon old-boy Sean Fellowes. We conceded another penalty, gained a free pass which was called defended even though the shot didn't take place... Although to be fair to the ref at least he was making decisions. I'd much rather play a game where a ref is prepared to blow and make a decision rather than do nothing at all, even if he doesn't get all his decisions right.

The second-half saw improved fight from Croydon and was closer than the first (second-half score 5-4 to Bec) meaning the final score for the game was 9-6. Not bad for our first game for a combination that's not played together before (hopefully we won't be saying that too many times this season!). Thanks to Susan and Steve on the side-lines, your insights were invaluable. Bring on the 2nds next week! :)

The 9 goal wonders strike again!

The fourths braved the weather and the Tooting traffic to take on Bec 5 last Sunday. A bit depleted they had to borrow Vicky and Sarah from the thirds, and many thanks to them. Lining up in first attack were Susan, Jon, Sarah and Dom L. To avoid confusion Dom B was at the other end together with his intended, Kathy as well as Martin and Vicky.

At first the fourths lapsed into depressingly familiar style from last season as they went 4 down without response. But they are now made of sterner stuff and were all working hard. By half time they had pulled back 5-4 with Jon getting on the scoresheet from short range.

Quite who scored what, when is difficult to tell when you’re in the middle of the melee. Susan got a long shot away and Dom L, playing only his first full game got 2 goals against Liam Clarke. Sarah was dropping off the post regularly and slotted 3 away whilst at the other end Dom B stuck with his usual basketball effort and Martin completed the scoreline.

Meanwhile, Bec 5 were slotting them in as well and at 7 all, on a changeover, their coach marched onto the court to question a decision. The ref soon dismissed him but Jon found himself at the wrong end and Tom Brady easily got a shot from under the post. 8-7 down with 5 minutes to play. Then 2 goals in quick succession took Croydon to 9-8 up. Knowing that they never score more than 9, the fourths defended heroically but Bec got the equaliser with the last shot of the game.

Well done guys - undefeated after 3 games and now known as the 9 goal wonders!
