Croydon 1 fail to turn up to top of the table clash with Nomads 2

Croydon entertained Nomads 2 in a crucial match in the London Regional League. They were unchanged from the cup match the previous day while Nomads fielded a different side to the reverse fixture earlier in the season but a strong side nonetheless.

It was Nomads who started the game with a flurry, scoring with their first attack and, despite a reply reply from Dan Pratt for Croydon, Nomads were clearly on top in the early exchanges. Croydon meanwhile looked lacklustre and lacking in edge in both attack and defence and Nomads exploited this with some fantastic shooting early on. The visitors raised to a 1-5 lead after only 4 minutes after Terry Forde skinned Andy Withers and Emma Cole her second from long range. Julia Johnson scored for Croydon but Nomads continued to assert their supremacy as they built a 2-7 lead. With 14 minutes gone, Croydon belatedly kicked into life: Pratt scored a drop-off, Ellis turned in the feed and Withers earned a penalty which eventually led to a second Johnson goal. 5-7 and all to play for but Simon Cole rattled one in from the corner to halt the slide and with Omar trading goals with his opponent the half finished 6-9.

Croydon's 2nd half started poorly for their attack, passes went missing for the first 4 attacks but the host's defence kept firm and Anna Jeanes reduced the lead to 2 with a goal from long range. Nomads then went on a devastating run though in the next 10 minutes, scoring 5 goals without reply and the match was over with 15 minutes left to play at 7-14. Susan Baker came on for Johnson with 10 minutes remaining and scored a couple of consolation goals but by then Nomads were home and hosed.

All in all a disappointing day at the office for the Croydon team as they only turned up and really competed for the 2nd quarter of the match, to win close games they will need to be firing on all cylinders for far longer. The cup match the previous day might excuse tiredness in the final quarter but not the first. For Nomads 2, it was a comfortable and thoroughly deserved win.

Croydon 2 let their lead over Supernova 1 slip

Croydon 2 played host to high flying Supernova 1. Captain Adam Champion, lined up in defence with Susan Baker, Steph Robinson and Ed Chaney. Up the other end were Joost Zierikzee, Mark Irving, Karen James and Kim Jones.

It took 6 minutes for the first goal to be scored, and it was a Supernova one, scoring under the post, but Jones immediately replied with a classic long shot.

The game followed this plan for much of the first half, although many of the goals were from the penalty spot. Neither team could get more than a couple of goals ahead, and at half time it was a low scoring 4-4.

Croydon scored the next 3 goals though and thought they had the game sewed up. Supernova had not read that script though, and stepped up the pace, scoring two great long shots, to leave them only 1 goal behind as the clock ticked down.

Croydon couldn't slow the game down, and as the ball flew into the Supernova half well within the last minute, Croydon gave away a penalty. Supernova calmly scored it and that was that. Game over. 7-7.

Croydon 3 draw with league leaders Supernova 2

A much changed Croydon 3 team team took on League leaders Supernova 2 with all to play for, and nothing to lose.

They overcame the fact that they hadn't played together as a team before, and also the fact that one of their starting players was injured in the warm up. They worked hard, played for each other, and fought hard for the ball.

Their tenacity paid off, and although the 2 teams were at opposite ends of the divisional table, Croydon 3 earned themselves a draw (10-10).

Croydon 4 knock out Nomads 6

Croydon 4 worked hard to overcome their opponents, and continue their winning streak. There were some great individual performances but it was the way the team worked together which won them the game.

Javier Plaza even scored in his first ever match, after coming on for Pratt (Steve).

The win ensures Croydon 4 zoom to the top of their division.
