Victory 'Bec'koned but Croydon didn't follow

Croydon came to the spacious (and convenient) venue of Whitgift to face Bec at home after a close home game earlier in the season. Within a few minutes the first goal tipped in for Bec and the bench wondered if luck was going to be with Bec. But Nigel, Vernon, Julia and Anna thought not and there was an early goal from Nigel dropped off from the collect with good movement. Then followed a good 20 minutes of play - a long shot from Grace, a characteristic twist and hook from Julia attacking from the back, a couple of goals from Dan (one provided by Grace and one -very- long shot). It was 7 all. Bec though were creating and scoring their own chances and called a time out at 20 minutes. Bec came back revitalised and more focused, and Croydon weren't. Ten minutes later at half time the score was 14-8 and Croydon needed to get back in the game.

The second half was more scrappy and neither team settled very well. Croydon started well with a short, quick goal from Dan, a calm free pass from Grace, a long shot from Vernon, and more from Dan dancing around the post as Bec suffocated fluid open play. Sue came on for Julia, and Luke for Ed who had thoroughly exhausted his player but their fresh legs and keen efforts were not enough. Croydon lost 16-14 and will no doubt be reflecting on whether the game could have gone differently if it weren't for the last ten minutes of the first half.

Croydon 3 win away at weak Woking 1

Croydon 3 took on Woking 1 at Addlestone Leisure Centre in a crucial battle at the wrong end of the table. Croydon fielded a strong, experienced line-up with Mark Wright, Susan Wright, Vicky Goode and Simon Mills in defence, Sarah Withers, Pete Lindsey, Steph Robinson and captain Steve Chadd in attack.

Croydon got off to a good start with an early goal but the small hall was restricting their attacking play somewhat, nonetheless the Withers and (S) Wright axis was working well again as the girls cashed in 5 goals between them. The other goal was to Goode. Half-time: 6-3.

At the start of the second half Woking got back into it but a flurry of goals from the visitors, slammed the door shut. This time it was Croydon's boys who were causing the mischief with Chadd and Lindsey attacking their players very well, whilst ably supported by some good feeding from Robinson, and with Lindsey on hand to mop up most collects, Croydon were able to keep the score ticking along. Down the other end, the ball was moving around the section nicely with the swift interchanges of passes creating lots of space and Mills secured a couple of drop-offs and then a penalty.

Final score: 7-13 and a very comfortable win for the visitors who seemed to gel well together from the off.
