Croydon's Clarke crushes Bearsted

Bearsted hosted Croydon in a crunch game at the lower reaches of the English Korfball League. Croydon made 2 changes: Susan Wright in for Kim Jones and Vernon Ellis in for Andy Withers. Both teams started a little tentatively but in what proved to a fore-runner to the whole match Toby Clarke scored a long shot and then running-in shot to give the visitors an early lead.

Bearsted were soon back into the match though as they scored 3 unanswered goals but after Chelsie Browne won a penalty (converted by Ross Carr-Taylor) it was obvious that this was going to be a topsy-turvy game. So it proved with the teams level at 5-all after 15 minutes. Becki Pratt gave away a penalty but redeemed herself with a long shot before a Clarke runner brought the game back to 7 a-piece. A Bearsted time-out seemed to help as they scored 2 goals straight from the off after Croydon appeared to be asleep and an immediate time-out from Carr-Taylor seemed to make little difference as a penalty and along shot eventually gave Bearsted a 4 goal cushion at 11-7. With time running out for the half, the next goal would be crucial but to Croydon's delight it was a long shot from Pratt and a free-pass from Hudspith before the whistle went leaving things delicately poised at 11-9.

Croydon needed to continue their comeback and this they did despite Carr-Taylor's missed penalty with Clarke winning and converting a further 2 penalties. He conceded 2 long shots to follow though so the home side were back in the lead: 13-11. Clarke scored another long shot with 20 minutes to go before Codd came on for an unusually quiet Susan Wright. Croydon were looking for another goal to even it up but Pratt's opponent scored from distance. Withers came on for Carr-Taylor but down the other end another free-pass conversion from Hudspith helped but Croydon were beaten by a runner and time was running away too.

Up stepped Clarke though for a training-ground move to score from the corner and soon after he followed up with a runner to again bring parity at 15-all. With 5 minutes left it was anyone's game but Croydon were defending manfully and it was Jane Hudspith who beat her player for a well-worked running-in shot. Time eventually ran out on the hosts with the score at 15-16 and Croydon victorious.

Croydon 3 not strong enough lose by 1

After hearing the first and fourth team had won their games we prepared our line up of first attack Amanda, Annie, Dom and Martin with defence of Adam, Anna, Ian and myself - nearly an 'A' team or not......

Woking scored first but Annie was having none of that and equalized - did she do that last week? All change Anna scored a running in shot then converted a penalty, arrh some breathing space, or not. As I hadn't noticed during the game but Annie's goal was the only one that sectioned scored?!? The section was keeping up with Woking fast pace but was unstructured, like last week even though two different players, I should've put Anna in for structure but we know what hindsight does!

My section then must've let in two goals for the change, I thought our defence was good as with Ian's calling and the 3 of us then going tight seemed to work (or not). I got a cheeky running in as not a lot of running needed . I do believe half time score was 5 -4 to us but not sure. Oh rest of goals was Ian an overhead under post goal like mine under post from a collect. Hmm maybe we shoot nearer as Steve always says...

Final score Woking 7 to our 6 but not the score, not an enjoyable game. Woking too physical for my liking as is social game as in no money in competiition, it's for the joy and elbows isn't how I play or wish my team to play. My opinion! We will need to man up I guess for next week.

Croydon 4 work hard but can't contain Woking.....er 1

Before the game Woking were very apologetic and said that they couldn't field an eligible team so could they play a friendly which was fine.

So David, Sarah, Janine and Craig opened the first attack with Kieron Beccy Charlotte and Jon in first defence. Woking were tall and they were experienced and they got the scoring underway even with 3 players at that end. Shortly afterwards their other player arrived so Croydon couldn't take advantage.I think Woking steadily pulled away to 3-0 but then Jon pulled one back with a running in shot. Sarah also got one from about 3m and David scored so by half time we had matched their 3 but unfortunately Woking had scored 3 more themselves.

Paul replaced Craig for the second half, both playing well in their first competitive game for the club-well it felt like this even though it was a friendly. But the revelation was Kieron, also playing his first game and bouncing around the court like a junior version of David. He was rewarded for his efforts by a well taken goal from 4m. Meanwhile Jon had taken a couple of running in goals but had also got carried away by missing an interception at the half way line which led to a goal being scored and conceding a penalty with the same result. David popped in another to bring Croydon up to 7 but Woking had raced away to score 16 in total.

There was much to commend in the team with plenty of effort from everyone and opportunities created. On a few occasions running in shots were conceded and we could do some work on defending these. Also while the ball was sometimes recycled the height of the opposition boys meant this didn't happen all the time-indeed to a certain extent at Jon's end they were leaving the boy collects at the post for the whole attack.

So we got the points for the conceded match but we got our real satisfaction after the game when we saw 6 of their players playing as Woking 1 against the thirds. As I write this I do not know the result but our thirds should win comfortably as we had already run the legs off them!
