Croydon 1 somewhat off Trojan's pace

The game started off with promise with a goal on the shot clock buzzer from Toby Clarke, swiftly equalled by Trojans. This was the pace that was to continue. Luke James replied with a long goal and the hosts felt a bit of a bounce in their step. However, this has happened against Trojans before and Trojans went onto score another 3 goals without reply. Turns out we had suffered in the new year break after all, and from their accuracy it felt like Trojans has spent the holidays shooting.

Vernon ellis picked it up and scored a well worked mid-range shot which was a real section effort from Becki Pratt, Grace Codd, and Luke finished off well by Vern (though Charlie was busy playing outside and missed his dad's goal.) Trojans scored another 3, including 2 running in shots which Croydon themselves had failed to bank having made some good chances.

Not dissuaded, everyone kept working and Toby scored another from downtown but the defending was just not there and 5 goals without reply followed. Luke scored a mid-range shot after a mix-up with the Trojans boys left him free but Croydon still went into a time out 6 goals down at 5-11.

Trojans seemed to talk more out of it than croydon as they pushed on with another 6 goals without reply until Luke converted one of his downtown efforts and Toby also got another long goal. After a penalty, The half time score was 7-19 - there was no getting away from the fact that we needed to follow the game plan and convert in attack and work harder in defence.

On the positive side, Trojans scored fewer goals in the second half (14) but so did Croydon, only managing a disappointing 5 goals in the second 30 mins. After an immediate goal from Trojans, they scored again before Susan Wright won a penalty which Ross Carr-Taylor converted.

After another run of goals, coach Ross decided to make a change. Hannah Driver had had a great game against her experienced opponent, and now it was Chelsie's turn to take her experience from her earlier game against Trojans 2. Sadly it didn't have an immediate effects Trojans scored another 3 without reply. Luke then converted one of his long shots, and Toby again played on the buzzer (which elicited a look of amazement/admiration from his player who could only shake his head). After another 4 goals from trojans. Ross decided Nigel Hudspith should slot in alongside Becky Pratt, Toby and Chelsie to play against Trojans big guy under the basket and Jane Hudspith should slot alongside replacing Susan Wright. Toby scored a nice runner beating his player for dead. Chelsie then fell badly and was off again injured. Having run out of girl subs Trojans generously allowed Susan to re-enter the game for the last 5 mins so the game could still be played properly. Luke finished off the Croydon scoring.

Trojans were deserved winners and played some very nice korfball, but Croydon will be disappointed they couldn't pull out a better performance against the title contenders.

Croydon go for seconds at Trojans expense

Croydon 2 came into their first game of 2014 hopeful of their first league double of the season. They started with Hudspith (Nigel), Lindsey, Bradford (Kathy) and Jeanes (Anna) in first attack while Browne, Chaney, Hudspith (Jane) and captain Mills assumed first defence.

Croydon started brightly taking an early lead, their attack causing problems - especially with the firepower of Nigel Hudspith and Jeanes who used their experience wisely. Meanwhile the other section struggled to contain their opponents wth the boys in particular causing problems.

Trojans continued to fight into the second half and refused to lay down easily, often battling with the referee as well as their counterparts. Former Croydonite Oosterling was often called on his holding and pushing, while the girls also grew frustrated as they charged their opponents.

The game remained tight throughout and while Croydon were able to stay ahead usually by a single goal, the strength of regular first teamers such as Nigel Hudspith and Browne kept the side's heads above water. By the time the final whistle finally arrived they were able to claim the double over Trojans with the final score sitting at 15-13.

Croydon can be pleased with the result despite not consistently finding their top gear. Jeanes was excellent, Nigel Hudspith and Browne were finding the korf from range and Mills, despite struggling to hold the ball, kept himself around the top of the regional league scoring charts with two decent efforts.

MVP was a close run thing with Bradford impressing yet again against top level opposition, but Browne edged it, putting in a fantastic shift scoring 4 brilliant and well timed goals which had a major impact on the final outcome.
