Croydon 2 suffer defeat in physical game against an angry Highbury

Croydon started with Pete, Ed, Becky D and Susan in 1st attack and Andy, Simon, Becki P and Kathy in 1st defence.

Croydon started slowly though and found themselves 2-0 down early on. Captain Simon was clearly frustrated and was warned about arguing with the ref early on. However Croydon fought back to 2-2 and things were starting to look up. Becky D then suddenly felt sick and left the field, to leave Croydon down to seven players with the score 3-3. She was back on a few minutes later, with no damage done as the score remaind locked at 3-3. However, the game's ugly side then came in. It was a physical game with both sides claiming foul play by the other. Even with this distraction the game still remained close and was anyone's to win with the half time score 10-7 to Highbury.

A good team talk at the half by Steve W. seemed to inspire the team who quickly reduced the deficit to 10-9. Croydon were realising that the trademark move wasn't working too well in the small hall, so adjusted well, with Susan getting the better of her girl with some clever runners. But just when you thought Croydon might be able to get a lead in the game, a few shots were missed and Highbury soon found themselves 14-10 in front. From there on it was just too big a gap to close and the final score was 15-12 to Highbury.

Andy and Becki did well to keep their cool with some very aggressive play from their opponents, Susan kept on chipping away at the scoreboard, Simon did well to recover from his early disagreements with the ref, Ed and Pete battled well, Kathy looked solid and Becky D showed she's made off tough stuff after returning to the pitch after leaving in the 1st half. A game that on another day Croydon probably could have won, but Highbury take it on this occasion.

Croydon 3 couldn't keep up with Highbury 2's scoring ratio

An unfamiliar yet enthusiastic bunch of CKC players faced Highbury 2 on Sunday, with Dom, Anna, Adam and Steph in first defence and Craig, Kim, Martin and Lorna in attack.
Highbury, with several drop down players, were slow to start but their goals soon started to snowball. Until half time when all were agreed that Croydon had given Highbury enough of a head start!
With their heads up, a few more goals started to pop in for Croydon. Anna and Martin scored some lovely long shots, Dom stole a sneaky goal under the post and Kim gave some top tips to her section to score a few more. Adam seemed to pop up out of no-where, displaying endless energy, and Dom managed to take out 2 opponents at the same time when taking a runner. And who would have guessed that Steph hadn’t played Korf for months – straight back in there!
Unfortunately, it was Highbury’s day and they just weren’t missing their long shots!
With plenty of enthusiasm the team managed to bring the final score to 24-7; a much better second half with some great defending and lovely moves!

Another close encounter of the korf kind

Rivalry was renewed at RR on Sunday afternoon when the fourth team sought to turnaround their previous early season defeat to the Swans.

After we had worked out who was playing at home the first goal went to the Swans against a defence of Jon , Kieron, Charlotte and Ellen. At the other end Kay , David, Paul(W) and Sarah (H) soon replied but the Swans got their beaks in front , going 3-1 up, and maintained a lead for much of the first half. However, by half time Croydon had nudged a single goal ahead:6-5 I think ( but I am sure that amazing memory of Emma's will correct me if I am wrong). In the second half the fourths kept their noses in front throughout but were never more then 3 ahead and near the finish were only one ahead.

A fantastic debut for both Kay and Ellen who soon managed to shake off their basketball heritage-they would have got MVP but for the fact that the system doesn't allow me to nominate 2 people and I couldn't distinguish...I mean choose between them. (By the way I forgot to take a photo until after the game and i was told that was definitely not the right time-sorry Sarah W). But I was happy to settle for Sarah H who scored her highest tally ever. A special mention must also go to Kieron who played against Ben who was suffering from a shoulder injury. Their own particular tussle ended up 5-3 to Ben. But this was a team effort and everyone played their part as did the Swans in making this a very enjoyable game.

So after 2 games against each other both teams have won one and lost one and have scored and conceded the same number of goals. it looks like the decider must be a game of shove halfpenny down at Coombe Lodge!!

Swans muted by strong Croydon 4 performance

Sunday 12th January saw Croydon Swans take on Croydon 4 for the second time this season in a highly anticipated showdown.

The first half started at a good pace, with Ben, Tom, Wendy and Jess in attack. The Swans opened the scoring as Wendy sunk a well executed long shot from about 4 metres. Croydon 4 quickly equalised and the sections switched. Roger, Michael, Amy and Emma were now in attack and Roger put this into good use, scoring 2 running in shots in quick succession. Goals were traded back and forth as Roger scored another running in shot, fed by Emma and set up by Ben at the half way line which was a play we had practiced in training. Ben was finding his form despite his neck injury and scored a goal from under the basket. The work rate was good from both teams and there was lots of battling under the post. Entering half time, Croydon 4 had edged ahead with the score 6-5.

After a quick half time talk, the Swans were pumped and ready to fight. Croydon 4 scored the next two, to take a 3 goal lead but Michael responded with a cheeky drop off. Both teams were firing on all cylinders and the tempo was still very fast paced. Croydon 4 maintained their lead and with 10 minutes to go, the score was 9-6. The swans reacted under the pressure with Amy battling for every ball and Tom taking an attacking role. The comeback was on and in the final few minutes Ben managed to score 4 running in shots, fed from Jess and Wendy. The speed of play never let up and the swans battled hard throughout but it was Croydon 4 who finished the stronger team, closing out the game to win 12-10.

The post-match debrief emphasised just how well the team had all fought and played against their competent opponents. Even though there were a few missed penalties and opportunities, it was a performance that the team can be proud of. Well done to Croydon 4 for a competitive but really fun game and thanks to Adam for refereeing. We look forward to another match against you where we can settle the score once and for all!
