Croydon 2 pay the penalties in season opener

Croydon 2 travelled to the Lions den for their first game of the season against a Supernova team that has mostly had years of experience playing together. The blues on the other hand were starting a team that had never played together before with Mills (c), Munshi, K. Swygart and Susan Wright in the first attack; whilst Ellis, A. Jeanes, A. Stevens and E. Swygart took first defence.

Croydon struggled to find their rhythm and despite the first half being a closely fought affair the reality was that as half time approached the blues were getting frustrated conceding a number of fouls leading to free passes and penalties while their opponents seemed to be getting back into the swing of the new season.

Going into the second half the team were still full of belief, however sadly it wasn't to be. Despite being told to cut out the silly fouls, it seemed to spread through the team and even the most experienced amongst them were giving away silly penalties. With Nova failing to miss Croydon soon found themselves slipping further and further behind.

If truth be told heads started to drop and as the game went on the belief started to wane. By the time the final whistle went Croydon were left trailing by 6 and the team walked off knowing they are capable of much much better.

Despite the negatives, giving away silly fouls and our long standing problem of putting away our chances, the team should take heart that they know they are capable of much better and that it was painfully obvious for anyone to see that the team needed time and practice together for sections to work - something this side haven't had.

It will certainly be interesting to see the outcome when the players have had more experience later in the season when the two meet again on Croydon's home turf.

Croydon 3 start as they hope to go on

First game of a new season, boo hoo it was away and in a hall that's freezing when waiting and no air when playing! The team arrived on time, gave support to the 2nds and honestly we had a mismatch of warm up but we got there, sections, pens and free throws decided.

1st attack the young bloods of Stephen, Sarah W, Mr & Mrs Bradford leaving defence of Ed, Mark, Vicki and Lorna. Pre game advice after watching the 2nds was to play a front defence and work to pass the ball out to the line - even if a little pass, to be safe!

It was a fabulous start as Sarah scored from 5m, probably from her first shot and then Stephen scored a penalty - all change. Not to copy our attack but Mark scores from 4m and Lorna scored a runner so another change 4 -0 to us. Both teams were passing well, we let in a long shot but our attack was awarded another penalty which Stephen converted 5 - 1!

We then let Supanova into the game with the half time whistle at 5 -3. After our attack being confused on who was going where or what were we doing, we even passed into the post but still managed to keep possession. But the game was changing....

2nd half started after everyone and I include Supanova in this waved to Daisy after her bye bye to mummy Sarah, so sweet!

We continued with poor defence letting in another goal. Dom after numerous one handed lobs scores from 2m (I missed it but have it on good authority it was 'kinda' korfball style). Supanova scored 2 more so it was level pegging - 1st time in the whole game, then they score again to take the lead.

Tut tut we cant be having a panic, more shouting and everyone at this point was aware of the score so step up Sarah - Goal! No messing around with another from Lorna and to finish us off comfortably a 5m from Ed.

A good win to start us off. If we had lost it would've been our fault but I do not know what we did to change or maybe we relaxed too much? Never mind, one down and loads to go. Lets hope we enjoy them all (or as much as we can) with no injuries too.

See you all at bowling on Thursday for some social chit chat and gentle competition of a different nature x

Last minute changes prove costly for Croydon 4 against Supernova 4

All seemed to be going well this Sunday morning until two texts within the same number of minutes produced some desperate phone calls and posts thankfully answered.

In first attack were Wendy and Emma, assisting from the Swans, with Alex and Brian. At the other end were only 3 with Vicky, thankfully stepping in at the last moment, Craig and David.

Although this was a last minute team it looked like it was going to be a good match, with the score doing little to reflect this. With so much going on I can only comment on our play and the sequence of scoring might be slightly different but Craig opened Croydon's scoring with a beautifully executed penalty followed by another penalty at the other end taken by Emma. Half time score 2-5 to Supernova.

With Adam helping out and pointing out some short comings Croydon went out to reduce the deficit which happened almost straight from the whistle with a well worked play between Vicky and Craig. Craig passed to Vicky, perfectly executed a run past his defender (see we do pay attention in training) to be fed with perfect timing by Vicky for a running shot. This caught the other section off guard as with bemused faces we swapped.

This was when Supernova made more use of their extra player and stretched their lead to 10-3. With, more a plea, than encouragement David suggested 1 more goal for Croydon, Wendy duly obliged ending the game 10-4. A mention must be made of both Brian and Alex who both gave good support to Emma and Wendy despite being up against probably the tallest players we have seen.

I would like to sincerely give my thanks to all of the ladies as without them, not only would we have had a 10-0 score sheet but also would have had points deducted for not fielding a team.

Splendid start for seamless Swans

The Swans travelled to Mitchamís new home Graveney with a strong 10 man squad. With Wendy and Emma getting late call ups for Croydon 4 coach Walsh reshuffled the starting line up and handed league debuts to Clare Sheahan and Simon Bracey Lane. Ben, Simon, Jess and Harriett started in attack against an inexperienced Mitcham side who seem to have recruited well over the close season.

Swans started brightly when Ben converted his runner of Jessí feed after 3 minutes. In defence the section of Rog, Joe, Clare and Joce defended well allowing time for Ben to pick up a loose ball and convert a second runner to make it 0-2.

Section change but there was no let up in the pressure. Joe converted one of his trademark one handed drop offs before Clare, who was impressive on debut, assisted Rog to dispatch a runner giving the Swans an early 0-4 lead. Ben converted a penalty before rebounding well off Jessís shot to make it 0-6.

Sections changed again and the balance of the side seemed spot on, with goals flowing at both ends. Joe scored from 5 metres before Rog peeled off his man and buried a drop off to give the Swans a well deserved 0-8 lead. The first half finished with Harriett taking up a great feed position and assisting Ben to score another runner.

Half time team talk and the request was to think further ahead and use the 9 goal advantage to try some different formations. Ben, Joe and Rog worked the post at either end and supported some of the newer players to take on more attacking roles. Harriett ran her girl every time with Ben in the feed until she was forced to drop off allowing Harriett the time and space to score from 3 metres.

Mitcham pulled one back before changes were made with Emma and Wendy coming on for Clare and Jocelyn who quickly made an impact. Rog scored from close range then assisted Emma to score a runner before Wendy brought a close to proceedings from 4 metres.

A very convincing 2-14 victory for the Swans who left Graveney in high spirits. Rog and Ben were a handful for their less experienced opponents. Joe did an excellent job to win his personal battle with the more experienced Jack, 2-1. Jess and Jocelyn played well and were unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Clare and Simon both made excellent debuts, battling well for every ball and were unlucky not to score.

A huge thank you goes to Wendy and Emma who both sacrificed their places in the starting line up in order to head to Millwall to play for Croydon 4. Special congratulations go to Harriett who won MVP in only her 2nd league game with two assists and two goals. Things are looking good for the Swans this season.
