Second half revival just too late for Croydon 2

Croydon 2 were left waiting for their first points of the season after losing out to Nomads 2, finding themselves on the wrong side of a 17-10 score line.

The blues in their first home game of the season took to the court with Vernon Ellis, Anna Jeanes, Adam Stevens and Ellen Swygart in the first attack, while Lorna Elliot, Simon Mills (c), Zu Munshi and Kay Swygart assumed defensive responsibilities.

It didn't take long for the visitors to get going as they quickly found the basket with two running in shots in succession as Croydon got to grips with defending as tight as possible. The two sections were soon swapping back once again after Nomads extended their lead to 4 with two penalties and it only got worse with the reds pushing on to go 6-0 up to another change of ends.

Croydon finally found themselves off the mark as Mills scored a drop off and it was the blues cheering once again as Munshi added his name to the scoresheet with a medium range shot. Ellen Swygart continued the mini revival after the sections swap with a smart running in shot before Nomads pulled away again with 3 unanswered baskets (a medium range, runner and another penalty).

Stevens stemmed the flow with a lovely long shot but there was still time for more damage to be done and at half time the visitors had a commanding 7 goal lead with the score standing at 4-11.

The home side were not helping themselves in the attack although defensively the score line appeared a little harsh. After some words from new coach Colin Boys the team returned with a renewed spirit ready to take the game to Nomads.

An energetic start saw Croydon awarded a penalty which Mills duly dispatched for his second of the day, but 3 unanswered goals knocked them back as Nomads scored a runner, a free pass and a close range effort. Croydon won another penalty and despite some gamesmanship from opposing coach Dave Butters who chose that moment for a time out, captain Mills maintained his composure to coolly slot it away.

With around 15 minutes left Ed Chaney replaced the injured Munshi and Kathy Bradford took Elliot's place for the remainder.

Youngster Stevens was starting to find his range and was rewarded with another goal from medium distance to make the score 7-14, before another 2 unanswered goals took it to 7-16. It was then Croydon's turn to put on the pressure and score back to back goals; Mills completed a penalty hat trick with his 4th goal, another beautiful long shot from Stevens and a second clever runner from Ellen Swygart had the reds panicking as they called another time out.

As the game reached its conclusion there was just enough time for Nomads to score another penalty and with that the game ended as Croydon had brought it back to a far more respectable 10-17 defeat.

Despite the loss captain Simon Mills was encouraged by the performance of the team. "We can take a lot of positives from the game, it's a work in progress and we are all having to adjust to the changes being made but it's starting to come together. There were some very impressive performances today from the younger players and they will only get better the more they play."

Adam Stevens was awarded Croydon's MVP for an excellent game in which he scored his first hat trick for the seconds.

Croydon 3 try but don't succeed..

A new line up with a mix of old and new faces. In fact only 2 players were at training on Thursday so well done to Alex and Ed! But thank you to the girls who kindly played after texts, emails etc etc.

1st attack was Dom, Kathy, Kerry and Stephen leaving the defence of Alex, Ed, Julie and Zoe. Bec 3 started off the better with a long shot going in and then another, all change. Kathy and Kerry did some good double defending but it was Bec that got the next 2 goals. Ed made a fabulous interception and the attack was good but no goal, another 2 unanswered goals eeek I think I got up and started pacing the side line and yes GOAL! (Now I confess Ed let the first goal in then the next I thought- I dont want to know who let goals in. Then forgot to write who scored the goals) Sorry guys anyone may edit!

I think it was Dom with a lovely drop from behind the post or maybe that was from one of Stephens lovely long shots that came later. Half time the score was 3 - 7 to Bec. Half time talk was to keep going as passing good and all players were switching well. Kerry to work the post in her section and Alex to keep his guy from ball watching in the other section.

Bec opened the goals but Croydon 4-8 so half way there... Nope, Bec get the next but Croydon mean business 5-8 with a beauty of a shot from Dom (I wrote that though dont remember now but sure he used 2 hands!) Julie draws a foul to set up Ed again and yes 5-10. Here my useless note writes oo er! Ed and everyone Arrh now I remember it was a fall over by all in Ed section ending with what would only be classed as a rude picture if Susan had taken it!
The lying down didnt help us as yes Bec scored then we did but 6 was our limit for the day and ~Bec got up to 13 boo hoo>

Thank you for playing guys, Alex I probably shouted too much at you, sorry, Dom super shooting, Ed you as always covered every inch of the pitch but def took control of a totally new section (hence MVP), Stephen how far away was that goal? super shooting but do remember to run in after just in case. Ladies Julie its 100% effort and I do love when you end up on the floor, praying with I got the ball, Kathy fine in switching and effort, Kerry you are nearly as racy as Ed and Zoe, thank you for the journey you still have it so why not put the shot up!?!

Well done guys as you never put your heads down or moaned and lets get ready for the rematch! x

Fighting Spirit Was Not Enough For Croydon 4

I knew today was going to be tough. With a squad that had not had the privilege of playing together as a team we eventually began to play together. First attack was given to Jocelyn, Wendy, Craig and Martin with Laura, Emma, Paul and David in defence. The first half was all rapped up 8-0 to Trojans3 although once again the score does an immense injustice to the Croydon4 players who played equally to those with a vast experience background in Trojans3? who had the accuracy to make their shots count, where Croydon could only hit the Korf indeed if hitting the korf scored points Croydon4 would have come in at half time with a sizeable lead. Recycling of the ball in our attacks was much better however (me being the biggest culprit) shots were rushed and off balance, having said that in both sections attacks were built and defence was robust.
With a talking to from Sue at half time Croydon4 came out with new vigour sadly a bit too much as from the start I wasted a pass to Emma who was completely open for a uncontested shot. Making good use the possession we had in attack we slowly built up momentum and it was Jocelyn who sank the first goal with great passing around the section to open up the space she needed. With a change it was Paul who scored the second goal from a well judged mid distance shot. Trojans3 slotted in a couple of goals between each of Croydon's but in defence we were stronger than in the first half picking up collections that we had no right to but collect them we did. Laura finished off our scoring with again a perfectly judged mid range shot which soared straight into the korf. End score 14-3 to Trojans but with the wealth of experience we were facing our scorers can be proud of their achievements.
Sadly I can only select one MVP, I would give everyone the honour however as I said I can only give one and it has to go to Laura who emulated Kerri's celebration after scoring and I think that got the round of applause and cheers rather than the goal. I must also thank Martin, Craig, Wendy and Emma for their tireless efforts and support.
Once again many thanks to one and all and big congratulations to Bryan and the 5's for their win.

New kit inspires CKC 5 to victory over Supernova 4

Report adapted from Supernova report.

After an extra hour of sleep, Croydon 5 hosted Supernova 4 at Royal Russell. Starting in attack were Bryan, Tom, Hannah and Emily; in defence Phil, Sarah, John and Sally.

Supernova very quickly opened the scoring with a short opportunity under the pole (0-1) but Croydon made themselves known and scored not long after to equalise.

A long period of time without goals followed both sides were defending strongly and pressure on the passing lead to loss of the ball. Croydon missed a penalty and were quickly punished by supernova scoring a beautiful goal (1-2).

The quality of the game improved and it was Croydon who had more success in finishing and two shots from a distance added to their total, followed by a running in shot and another long distance shot. The half-time score was 5-2.

Supernova started the second half with bravery and self belief but Croydon were awarded a quick penalty which they finished on the second attempt. Supernova broke the Croydon momentum again to make it 6-3 but Croydon were playing aggressively and created more opportunities at this stage claiming a goal as a result. Croydon then scored a penalty and a shot. The final score was 9-6 in favour of Croydon.

Croydon played tighter and more aggressively than Supernova and created more opportunities. However, both sides should be proud of the effort and hard work put in it was very clear to see that the newer players on both sides are making progress each week.
