Croydon 2 take the points in thriller against Nova

Croydon 2 returned home following a disappointing defeat to Highbury 1, this time looking to gain revenge over Supernova 1 for their opening day defeat. The hosts lined up with Annie Campbell, Vernon Ellis, Zu Munsh and Sarah Withers in first attack while Alex Burr, Lorna Elliot, Anna Jeanes and captain Simon Mills assuming defensive responsibilities.

The blues got off to a bad start as they got to grips with their new sections and before they could adapt to working with different players they found themselves 2 goals down from the opening exchanges. No such problems as the sections switched though and they were soon on top thanks to a Mills double, scoring first from a drop off and a second from long range. Munshi continued the scoring with a long effort as Croydon found the lead for the first time before the visitors returned the favour to level the scores back up at 3-3.

A cracker of a game was starting to take shape, Supernova retook the lead (3-4) before Mills scored a runner to swap ends and Munshi followed up his first with a near range shot (5-4). The away team restored parity with a runner but another 2 from Mills who was really leading his team in the attack with a penalty and a runner to bring his tally up to 5 for the game (7-5). With the half winding down however a runner and a penalty denied Croydon an advantage at the break with the scoreboard reading 7-7.

After some motivational words from Coach Boys, the team came out ready for action, though the scoring did not go its way. Two near range shots caused an early panic but the blues rallied with 5 unanswered baskets. Annie was had been causing her girl no end of trouble nabbed herself a runner, Ellis found his range scoring two from long and medium respectively while Jeanes and Mills added the other two taking Croydon into their own clear lead (12-9).

Before the final whistle blew there was just enough time for Supernova to score from distance, one final effort from Mills brought him level with a personal best haul of 7 and more importantly seal the win for the hosts; Croydon emerging as 13-10 victors.

A fine result from Croydon 2 who are starting to look optimistically ahead to safety this season. However with another big game to follow next week against Mitcham the team need not part themselves on the back just yet.

Swans sink Supernova's seven

Swans arrived at Royal Russell for the return leg against supernova 4 hoping to repeat their previous win two weeks before.

Play started quickly with a runner from Ben fed by Jess. Supernova quickly responded with a penalty and long shot to make it 2-1 to the away team. The attacking section of white, sheahan, Palmer and smith worked the ball round well and ending with a runner from joe, fed by Rog making the score even. Sections switched and the partnership of Walsh and Yearwood worked well with a clever long pass from Leo to allow Ben to score a running in shot, followed by a feed from Jess to make it 4-2. Sections switched and not to be outdone by their team mates, Rog scored a nice 4 metre shot then followed by a runner from joe. Two more goals scored by the partnership of Leo and Ben making it 8-2 at half time.

Supernova came back fighting and quickly scored a long shot making the score 8-3. Rog worked hard at the post and found the feed to allow Sturgess to get a runner. Leo worked hard in attack and managed a nice 4 metre shot. Supernova scored two more making the result 10-4. The section of White, Walsh, Green and Yearwood worked really hard with Jess constantly supporting in the feed, allowing Wends to score and lovely runner. Supernova never gave up and put the pressure on scoring two more goals. Rog then calmly took a 3 metre shot that slotted in well! Sections switched and two final goals from Ben made the final score 14-7.

Good effort from all in the team and swans remain top of the league! Thanks to those who came to support and Simon for reffing. MVP was hard to choose, with Smith just missing out to Leo. Swans are looking forward to the local derby against the 5s next week!
