Croydon 3 keep the lead to win the game

A slight change to our usual line up and due to knowing my head is not in its usual gear I asked the duo of Kim and Steve Jones to come coach us which they kindly did. Their section choices of starting attack were Dom, Ellen, Karen and Martin leaving defence of Alex, Ed, Kay and myself.

What a fabulous start, the attack was playing and passing the ball easily with the perfect result of goal! Ellen was running past her girl and putting up shots but just not finding the basket, but oh after that practise she does. All change and honestly I have no clue on what happened and who scored for the whole game. We played hard and listened to sideline advise and eventually our section did score. I shamefully missed a penalty but Kay beautifully saved my bacon with a long shot to notch another goal. Dom got a drop off and he no actually all 4 in that section were collecting the ball very well, Martin scored a nice neat 1m. Ed was for longer range. Alex kept his man busy and scored a sweet 4 m drop off. Karen always the everywhere had a full range of shots totally 4!?!

Half time we were up by 1 goal I think and had our allocated jobs to do. importantly to keep our heads and stick to simple korfball like we had at the start of the game. Yeah we managed to do it with Steve and Kim talking sidelines and woo hoo we win by 5 goals, oo isnt that the number the Swans and 4ths oh and the 5ths like?

Well played everyone, I do hope you enjoyed the game and will train next week...

Croydon 4 hold higher placed Swans

Before I go into the match report I must offer my unreserved apologies to our referee for my conduct. I above all others know that refereeing can be a thankless task at times and I know that Anna was doing her job, as she always does, to the highest level. I therefore also must apologise to the team as undoubtedly it affected my play.

I did not anticipate such a close game, playing against a depleted Swans team due to half term, their squad was still a strong one. Croydon 4 helped by "daughter" of Dirk known to most of us as Karen reiterated his advice to assist and communicate with each other (it was as though Dirk was there). Sorry Dirk you must of taught her too well as at half time Croydon 4 came in 4-1 ahead. The opening attack were David, Craig, Sarah H and Laura with the defending section being Jon, Paul, Julie and Hannah. Throughout the game Paul and Jon out defended their opposing players preventing the Swans customary running in attack and with the support of Julie and Hannah greatly hindering the feed players.
In attack Sarah was all revved up ready to sink as many goals as she could to get to her 100th for the club (maybe next time) but started off by opening the scoring despite my pre game thoughts Croydon 4 out performed their past form collecting and recycling the ball for multiple attempts with (Paul would have been pleased that we had been taking something from training) non verbal and verbal communication.
David managed to get free to get the 2nd goal for Croydon. All change. Again the attacking section worked hard to get position giving Jon the opportunity to sink a 3rd for Croydon. In the other section Croydon again had to work hard to prevent Swans getting back into the game but I am afraid, due to lack of concentration, I allowed my player space to get one back. With the sections again changed back play went back and forth with each team battling hard to get or retain possession eventually the stale mate was broken with Jon getting his second, a rather scrappy runninig in shot.

With words of warning from Craig and thoughts from Karen into the second half we went. The tide had tuned with the Swans coming out the stronger getting 3 quick goals before Sarah had the opportunity to get her 2nd to take Croydon 4 ahead. Sadly even though Croydon 4 played well above what they had done previously Swans managed to level the match. End result 5-5. Now I have not mentioned Laura who unassumingly played a vital role in our success. However although disappointed, I am very pleased to see that the break has been beneficial and I have high hopes that we can work as we did today and come away with some victories from our last 3 games. MVP although always difficult this week was relatively easy Paul as he truly hassled his opponent preventing with almost certainty collects and running shots.

As always if anyone wants to add things that I have omitted please insert them.

Croydon 5 get revenge as we trounce top of the league Bec 5 in a thrilling match

Croydon 5 approached this match with some trepidation, especially considering Bec 5's top of the table status and the 14-1 thrashing they gave us in the first match of the season.
However, with the benefit of a much improved Croydon team, and a slightly depleted Bec's team, we started the game in a spritely fashion, with both our attacking and defensive sections giving it their all right from the start.
After just a few minutes this effort paid off with Hannah slotting in the first of her three goals.
This is where my match report becomes a little vague, as my trusty note taker was happy taking snaps of the match without writing anything down. Whoops (if anybody wants to add some detail to this report, please feel free).
Croydon scored a second, and possible a third before Bec got off the mark, but Bec were always slightly on the back foot, with our defensive play keeping them nicely at bay while we managed to score four more goals to their one before half time, giving the scoreline at the break an incredibly impressive 7-2 to Croydon.
The half time talk stated the obvious - more of the same - with a few extra pointers from David (thanks very much Dave).
However, the few minutes rest must have slowed us down slightly, because Bec managed to score three goals in a row before we could add any more to our score. At 7-5 half way through the second half it looked like it could be heading for another one of those 'Might Have Been' matches, but all of the Croydon players held their nerve and if anything began to play better Korfball than we had in the first half.
This resulted in three more goals scored for us, giving us a little cushion to allow us to play out the last seven or eight minutes.
It was still not over, as Bec's pushed and pushed, trying desperately to close the points gap. In the last five minutes or so they managed to put three more onto their tally, but Croydon responded with two more of our own, giving a final score of 12-8 to Croydon.
All in all this was an excellent result. It was a lovely feeling to be part of the team that stopped Bec 5 continuing their 100% unbeaten record.
I'd like to thank everybody on the team for playing their hearts out. MVP to Annie. Not just for the four goals, but also for putting one past their guest 1st team player. Nice goal Annie.
A well deserved win all round.

Swans out battled in close encounter

If Korfball matches were only 25 minutes long the Swans would be a force to reckon with. Unfortunately the Swans don't start playing until the second half and this Sunday was no exception. The settled section of Roger, Emma, Joe and Harriet looked solid in defence as ever however the newly formed section of Ben, Wendy, Tom and Jevana on debut couldn't find their rhythm. The first half ended with Swans 4-0 down and looking at their first defeat in 6 games.
Ben gave the same team talk he gave last week against the 5th team which was to battle harder and win the physical challenges! The team responded well and while it made the second half quite untidy and scrappy at times it allowed the Swans back into the game. Jon was excellent in defence all game and forced Bens section to change their tactics. Ben and Jevana worked the post and Tom and Wendy attacked. The change paid off as Tom and Wendy both converted from 3 metres to make the score 4-2. Rogers section were not to be out done and started to find their stride. Harriet converted a drop off for the Swans 100th goal of the season before a trademark one hander from Joe took the scores level with 5 minutes to go.
By this stage the hall was now full and the cheering and clapping added to the exciting finish. Sarah, keen to not be on the losing side to the Swans twice in two weeks scored from 4 metres before Ben turned out of feed position to slot home from under the post. There were further chances for both teams to win it however the draw seemed a fair and fitting result!
There were some excellent individual performances to mention for both teams. Jon and Craig in particular were strong and committed in defence and kept Ben and Roger to one goal between them. Sarah won her ongoing personal battle with Emma which is always an evenly matched encounter and Julie found a lovely balance of being competitive but also supporting her opponent with it being her first game. The half term fixture is always difficult for the Swans but I have to commend the commitment with players travelling from Finchley, Shepherd's Bush and the Isle of White to make sure the fixture went ahead. MVP goes to Jevana who looked far more experienced than she really is. Disappointing not to win however that point may prove vital come the end of the season.
