Frustrating morning for new look Croydon 3

Croydon 3 headed for another early match down to Trinity School to play Bromley 1. With a new look team the Captain decided to rearrange the two sections to try to cope with Bromley's youth and pace. The first attack started with Anna, Andy, Adam and Charlotte and first defence was Dom, Ed, Zoe and Laura. Talk at the start of the game highlighted the need to mark tight and communicate from the post. Within two minutes Bromley were 2-0 up-all change. Ed then got a nice long shot from behind the post, but Bromley responded with yet another goal to go 3-1 up. Then Bromley got the next, before Ed responded with his second. Then at 4-2 Croydon got a penalty and a chance to get back in, unfortunately Andy's effort just missed, this seemed to spur Bromley on who got the next two, 6-2. Ed got a couple more but a lot of misplaced passes and missed opportunities cost Croydon who went into half time 9-5 down.
Dom's talk at half time was to focus on the basics; simple passes and correct shot selection-he then went and gave the ball straight to Bromley with a poor pass from the restart. The second half was much closer but Croydon continued to make silly mistakes, especially with their passing and their lack of dummy running. Bromley played well, were energetic and made some good long shots, but Croydon really didn't help themselves and will do well to forget this performance quickly and regroup for the next league game.
A frustrating day, when nothing seemed to go in Croydon's favour, but work needs to be at training to focus on collecting when front defended and getting into space when tightly marked.
Thanks to everyone for playing, lets put this game behind us and come back stronger in the next game!

Croydon 4 lose to Mitcham 2 after rushed start!

Mitcham 2 almost had the fourths on the back foot before the match, deciding to start the game 30 minutes early but such was Croydon's enthusiasm that almost everyone was at there anyway. It just meant that there was no time for a warm up and it probably showed.

First defence was Jules, Phil Jon and Lily, gamely stepping in until Annie arrived about 5 minutes in. At the other end were Tom and Hannah, playing their second game of the day, Laura and Craig.

Jules' end suffered from two tall males who Jon and Phil struggled to play against. They rattled the rim quite a few times but when their opponents recognized their lack of shooting practice they just stood off under the post and collected. Meanwhile at the other end Tom had more success. Nonetheless Mitcham went ahead first and were ahead throughout the game coming in at half time 5-3 up.

It was good to see Laura on the scoresheet but the only goal I can actually remember was Annie speeding in from distance and easily converting a running in shot. What does stick in the mind was 3 (yes 3) penalty misses with Craig, Jon and Phil all sending identical shots over the basket. It would be an uncharitable excuse to say the court was marked out wrongly but there is no doubt that more practice is needed.

A lot of good determined effort from everyone but we need to work more as a team as well as on the shooting-see you on Thursday.

(Please feel free anyone to refine this rather broad bruhs assessment.)

Bec 5 do enough to beat rejigged Croydon 5

After stealing a swan (thanks Harriet for stepping up) Croydon 5 were ready to play Bec 5 away at Ernest Bevan. With Lorna, Callum, Harriet and Adam in attack and Bryan, Hannah, Tom and Dawn in defence; it was Bec 5 who took a quick lead slotting in 2 goals in short succession. It was a lead that Bec 5 never gave up. Whilst goals did go in from Bryan, Lorna and Hannah, Bec always had a response and managed to maintain their lead. Croydon 5 never gave up and performed well to keep themselves in the match all the way to the final whistle. With the seconds ticking away Bec 5 guaranteed the victory by scoring a number of goals which extended their lead leaving Croydon unable to fight their way back.

Callum got MVP for defending well throughout the game and his quick thinking to switch player during a well worked running in shot.

The effort was there from all players but Bec5's experience of regularly playing together alongside their well practised attack strategies meant they were able to quickly take and maintain their lead throughout.

Please feel free to add or change if you remember more about the order of goals than we do

Just a quick note to add that my two goals (Bryan) were both from penalties, if that makes a difference.

Battling Swans almost claw it back at Bec

Swans arrived at Ernest Bevan keen to try and secure he second win of the season. First attack was Roger White, Jocelyn Galloway, Joe Smith and Clare Sheehan. First defence was Lindsey Kelly, Tom Richards, Ben Walsh and Emma Sturgess. Within the first 5 minutes, Joe scored by doing a lovely one handed shot. Quickly after, Bec came back fighting and took the lead with 2 goals to 1.
Ben calmly converted a penalty to even it to 2-2. There were good chances created by the Swans but the ball just didn't quite make it into the basket.
Bec took the lead for the second time with 2 long shots making it 4-2.
Some good positional play in attack, where Ben ran his man, allowing Tom to be free to shoot a nice 3 meter shot, making it 4-3. Bec scored one more near the end of the first half to make it 5-3 at half time.
The second half started with The Swans fighting back with Joe scoring a running in shot, fed by Joc, bringing the score to 5-4.
Bec continued to put pressure on the swans, taking the lead with another 2 long shots, making it 6-4.
Some good recycling from The Swans which enabled the ball to remain in our attack. However, Bec still managed to score another long shot, making it 7-4.
Ben was able to score another penalty and Joe was able to score another one handed shot, making it 7-6.
The Swans got their fighting spirit back, however, Bec were able to score one more korf, making it 8-6.
Determined not to allow anymore goals, The Swans defended well, getting the rebounds and allowing the attack to keep the ball. A final penalty, taken by Ben brought the final score to 8-7, with The Swans working hard to not let the opposition score again. This gave the Swans one final chance to snatch an equaliser, unfortunately it wasn't to be and Bec ran out winners by a single goal.
The Swans head to Nomads next week and will be looking to bounce back and build on their performance today.
