Tremendous effort by Croydon but in the end simply outclassed by Trojans

A newly promoted team against the perennial champions was always going to be a tough ask for Croydon today, but the team were excited to give it their best shot. The Blues started with Robinson, Withers, Brazzill and Bovey in attack with Bradford (stepping in as captain), Munro, Gooch and Mills in defence. A quick goal in the first attack of the game saw Croydon take a 1-0 lead but it wouldn’t last as Trojans quickly ran out to a lead. Although there were first half goals from Brazzill, Bovey and Mills, Trojans scoring at a rate of a goal for every two shots led to a half-time score of 4-25 to the visitors.

During halftime the team resolved to concentrate on playing stronger defensively and you could see this in effect during the 2nd half with several long passages of play without a goal (or at least a change of ends). However, in attack Croydon were struggling to find their rhythm and Trojans were still able to find the korf at an impressive rate. Second half goals came from substitutes Pavey and Chaney, and Robinson and Bradford (who deserves mention for her fantastic goal celebrations that all players would do well to imitate). All in all the final scoreline of 8-48 while perhaps reflecting the skill-gap between the two sides isn’t indicative of the strong periods of play put in by the Croydon side who showed improvement from last weeks performance.

Croydon 3 carry on winning ways with Susan getting 200 up!

So it was the re-match between Croydon 3 n the Swans. 1st attack of Paul, Craig, Susan and Zoe. 1st defence Dom, Steve, Anna and Jane. It started off a nice close contest exchanging goals until it was 2-2. However, Susan was on a mission today......before the game she knew she needed 7 goals to reach 200 for the club-so by half time she had 6!!! 14-3 at the half.
So the second half was much more even though with the swans resilient in defence and Joe coming up with a couple of nice goals for them. Everyone on the Croydon team made sure they had scored by the end but the last bit of magic came from Susan (who after missing a few a her easier chances in the game!) popped up with a lovely 5 metre shot and with it her landmark of 200 goals!
The game was played in good spirits throughout and on this evidence the swans should have enough to stay in this league as well if they play like they did (especially in the second half).
But the last word has to go to Susan who had one of those inspiring days-7 goals on the day and now 200 up for the club. Congratulations Susan!

Croydon 4's experience beats the youthful and energetic Bromley2

Having watched Croydon 5 play and struggle with 6 it was a great to be lining up with a full complement for both teams. In first attack was Hannah, Jade, Tom and Ian and first defence were Dawn, Sarah, Jon and Paul.

The game was low scoring in the first half with sustained periods of attack and defence without a goal. Bromley looked to their boys to put shots up and worked their section to attempt to give the boys clear room for shots. Croydon were strong in defence and limited opportunities from long shots and runners. Whilst unsure of the scoring order, Croydon did manage to build a healthy lead towards half time.

Following a detailed team talk from Ian and Steve, Croydon adapted their play to deal with Bromley's main threat - the boys. Croydon allowed Bromley space far from the post as shot accuracy was poorer at distance. This allowed Croydon to quickly recycle the ball and continue to score at a good rate. The strategy paid off as Croydon sank a variety of goals to maintain and stretch their lead. Croydon should be pleased with their defensive work, limiting Bromley to only 3 goals whilst creating many chances of their own. Croydon could and should have scored more with a little more accuracy or a slice of luck. Nevertheless the final score of 8-3 was a good result.

The MVP, due to her flurry of goals including a couple of lovely runners goes to Dawn.

Outnumbered Croydon 5 battle to keep up but miss out

As Croydon 5 began arriving at Royal Russell mayhem soon followed with Trojans saying the game was meant to start over an hour earlier than CKC 5 thought. After a few manic phone calls to Anna and a lack of understanding of the rules (whoops!), Croydon 5 played the game with only six players.

Beginning in attack were Vicky, Mark and Danielle; with Craig, Tom and Alice in defence. Trojans soon took advantage of the fifths being down two players scoring two to switch ends. At this point it was difficult for Craig and Tom who thought they needed to try to avoid scoring goals as they could only have half on the scoreboard. However in an effort to get the halves swapped back around, Tom was the first on the score sheet with a long goal. After two free passes, it was Tom who slotted in his second goal of the game.

As a swap of ends happened, Mark timed a perfect running in shot (assisted by Vicky I believed) to get Croydon up to 3:2. However, this lead was soon lost with Trojans responding with the next five goals; ending half time on 6:3.

The second half was much quieter for both teams with two more from both sides; Croydon's from Craig and Mark.

All members of the team battled hard and gave their all throughout the game so MVP was a tricky one to decide.

Swans sunk by Susan's seven

The Swans always enjoy the healthy competition felt when playing CKC and today's game against the 3s was no exception.

Croydon started with a strong first half, unstoppable were Susan's incredible array of long shots, but the Swans were determined to maintain the pressure against a highly experienced team. Goals were scored from both sides with Joe slotting in the first goal for Swans and Lindsey after working space with some good footwork, cooly finishing a well worked move for her first goal of the season. Both sections worked the post and defended with passion; Roger secured a third goal leaving the first half at 3-14 to CKC.

After 2 more goals from Croydon Roger sunk a classic long shot bringing the score up to 4-16 and getting the Swan's determination racing again. Battling on, Ben, Jocelyn, Simon and Amy worked efficiently at the post allowing Ben to score with a penalty and Jocelyn to beat her player at the post bringing the Swans' goals to 6-16. Another few stunning shots from Croydon and an actual blinder from Roger as he knocked Paul's contact lense out, the game was still fighting on. Strong, paced movements from the half way line and the post between Emma, Joe and Roger opened up opportunities, whilst our defence continued to fight to get the ball back into the attacking half. This determination enabled Joe to finish the game with a close up shot bringing the end result to 8-19, the Swans content with the second half effort they had put into the game.

Huge congratulations go out to Susan from all the Swans for an inspiring game and her 200th goal! Thanks also to Sarah for reffing.
