Croydon 2 just fall short to league leaders Nomads 2

Nomads 2 were this week’s visitors to Royal Russell as Croydon 2 sought back to back wins following their impressive demolition job on Bec 3 the fortnight previous. It would not be an easy task against a strong opponent sitting at the top of the table especially after last minute absences left Croydon short of boys.

The team set out with captain Simon Mills, veteran Anna Jeanes, the returning Zu Munshi and lovely Laura Nicholls in first defence. This left international superstar Marc Brazzill, fitness guru Annie Campbell, Inter Regional ace Adam Steven and the loveable Laurena Willamson to start in attack.

As usual my memory of the match is rather hazy – such is my pure focus on what I was doing (that or not being able to multitask for toffee!) what is not hard to forget was a distinct lack of goals. The first half was a very low scoring affair with only a few changes of ends, by the time the whistle was blown for half time Nomads had a 4 goal lead. (2-6).

The start of the second half would follow a similar pattern, as both defences emerged on top for the most part. After around 10 minutes or so Croydon finally broke their opponents resistance and scored to take them back to within sight of a point (or greater). Nomads were not to be outdone however, they soon returned the favour – another exchange of fire saw each side score a piece and a new pattern emerged, with the Blues giving themselves hope only for the league leaders to dash it in short order.

By the time the final whistle had gone, the score for the half had returned to the balanced position that suited Nomads for the result as they claimed a 12-8 victory to hold their position at the top of the table.

Croydon 2 can feel encouraged with a decent performance against a strong outfit. More work is needed in an attacking sense to break down solid defences, although with changes in both team and each section this will likely come with game time and by getting used to how each other play.

Anna Jeanes was awarded MVP for another outstanding performance, contributing superbly in her section with 2 goals, assists and some excellent defensive work to deny her player.

Second half slump costs Swans

The Swans welcomed Supernova 2 to Royal Russell looking to build on a morale boosting win against Bec 4 the week before.
First attack was Ben, Adam, Jocelyn and Harriet, with Rog, Joe, Jess and Sturge in first defence. The opening exchanges were pretty scrappy with both sides eager to try and take control. Goals were traded evenly throughout the first half ending in the Swans taking a slender lead into the half time break.
Soon after the restart Supernova capitalised on a hesitant and sleepy Swans defence to overturn the lead and take control of the match. The Swans shellshocked worked hard to try and stay in touching distance. However Supernova's subs took no time in finding the korf and extending the lead beyond the Swans reach. A valiant effort from the Swans and a rally towards the end of the second half saw them eventually finish on the wrong end of a 16-10 score line.
It was certainly a game of two halves and had the Swans been as switched on in the second half as the first the end result may well have been different. However a lapse in concentration and discipline for the Swans was the key factor in the final result.
