Close but no cigar, in first match for Croydon 1

Croydon 1 welcomed Nomads 2 to Royal Russell for their first game of the season. There was a bit of bad luck from the start, with Hannah breaking down on route, so Anna stepped in to play the full game. However, from the off it looked like it was going to be a close gameÖ. and so it proved with both teams exchanging goals for the majority of the first half. Towards the end of the second half fatigue kicked in a little, but it was still a good performance from the firsts to get 15 goals in their opening game of the season. Final score 15-20.

Some positives from the game:
Adam had a solid game and looked like he was made for the first team, especially around the post.
Anna and Susan effortlessly stepped in for injured and absent players.
Kathy scored a sublime goal that didnít even touch the sides.
Zu looked sharp and contributed 5 goals, including 3 pens.
Stephen outplayed his player all game and showed a touch of class with a great show of sportsmanship (returning the ball to the opposition following a questionable reffing decision).
Becki came off injured early on, but it was great to see her back on the pitch later (allowing Susan to represent her third Croydon team of the day!!).
Kim created so many shooting opportunities for herself during the match.
Good to see Luke back in the Blue and Black of Croydon!

With a bit of hard work and training and a little more luck on our side, Iím sure this season will be a good one for Croydon 1 and I look forward to our next match where we can look to rack up our first win of the season. Well played everyone!

Croydon 2 get harsh lesson in first match of the season

With a new look Croydon 2 team taking to the pitch against a very strong Bec 2 team (including some international players!) it was always going to be a tough opener for Croydon. To be honest it was a very one sided game for much of the first half and Croydon found themselves 17-0 down at half time. Bec managed to stretch this lead to 20-0 before Alex finally had enough and decided to stop the rot 20-1, with Susan and new captain Dom also getting on the score sheet soon after to take the score to 23-3. But that was the end of the mini revival and Alex only managed to add another brilliant long shot before the end of the match.
Not the start to the season Croydon 2 would have wanted, but onwards and upwards from here. We will become more competitive when we get a regular team together and recall some familiar faces who were missing today. Heads up!
Bring on Trojans 2!

A confident start in a new league. Just need more goals.

Croydon welcomed Bec 3 to Royal Russell for the start of the new season. Hannah, Dawn, Bryan and Tom started in first attack with Rog, Mark, Joc and Anneka in first defence. Croydon made the perfect start with goals from Hannah and Tom, however Bec hit straight back to level the match which would set the tone for the majority of the game. Goals from Tom and Rog ensured Croydon would go into half time level at 4 - 4.
Buoyed by the first half performance against an experienced Bec side, Croydon were aware they would have to continue to stay strong in defence whilst taking their chances in attack.
Croydon and Bec continued trading blows like two heavyweight boxers as Bryan and Mark got their names on the scoresheet and Tom completed a well deserved hat trick. Unfortunately for Croydon at this point their shooting evaded them and Bec took full control scoring 5 unanswered goals. Croydon refused to give up and a smart long ranger from Anneka right on the final whistle demonstrated this. Unfortunately this was only a consolation as Bec ran out 12-8 winners. Croydon can be dry proud of their performance in their new division and will take plenty of positives from the game. MVP went to Joc who worked tirelessly in attack and defence.

Croydon 5 start with panic of players then play with panic players!

Well not a great start to the season with a late night pull out and already having to borrow a boy from the higher teams but we did it! Started with 8 players as Dawn kindly agreed to play twice.

Big bonus was Karen and Mark put the posts out so the pitch was all ready yeah and thank you. I also made Karen our manager as Dawn was now playing. By looking at who Bec had I put Charlotte, Dawn, Jon and Phil in first attack leaving Alex, Alice, Callum and myself to defend.

Now here starts the boo hoo notes. Bec scored first and second! the second was my woman with a drop off, I was too busy watching other players and more speed needed! All change and I think we were playing the ball around well but only got scoring opportunity as Alex was fouled. Still irritated with letting a goal in I stepped up and scored the free throw - game on. Or not, Alice whose player was new but physical resulted in Alice coming off as she hadn't been feeling well and enough was enough a lie on the bench was needed to recoup and feel better.

Our defence tried everything and were winning interceptions and the collection but eventually let in a goal. By swopping to attack Charlotte didn't take a golden opportunity to shoot but did later with a penalty so goal and score 2-3 so maybe us 7 could be competition...

I teased the answer is no, the score went to 2 - 7. Our passes were intercepted and shots were missed on both sides. Phil ran like a gazelle with the result of scoring his running in shot yeah! I was too shouting especially at Alex and in our section he was pushed, cuddled and shoved by most of our opposition so have made him MVP which Karen said was me but I feel I did do a lot of shouting to Alex re passing and one perfect pass, I didn't even catch!! Plus Karen said I shot (and missed) when Alex was past his player. To finish I got a runner and Alice kindly came back for the last minutes but final score 4 to us and 9 to Bec.

Not a great start to the season but not a full team and with the rule re step ins not scoring makes playing harder for those kindly filling in. In my section Alice, what you did was fine just be as snappy back, Callum fabulous moving and shooting as those were long shots that hit the basket, Alex moved everywhere and sorry for nagging. Dawn slogged and intercepted beautifully, Charlotte always with your player, Phil and Jon the speedsters I dont know how you do it!

Next game folks x
