Croydon 1 battle hard against fast paced Bec 2

Croydon 1 set out with enthusiasm to play Bec 2 with Luke, Adam, Hannah and Kay in attack and Andy, Zu, Kathy and Becky in defence. Croydon started off confidence with Adam earning a clever penalty for his team which Luke converted. Bec boys then responded with 4 goals but Croydon carried on battling with Kay and Zu scoring around the basket and Luke scoring a mid-range shot. After 10mins the score was 4-6 with everything to play for.

Bec then scored a couple of free throws and Croydon boys added to the goal tally, but Bec girls responded. Adam was having a fantastic first half and half time came around with a score of 14-18. Coaches Colin and Steve were positive about Croydon 1s performance against the tough Bec side. Coach Colin advised Croydon to concentrate in defence and score those little shots around the basket.

Kay had clearly listened to Colin's advice and started off the second half completing her hatrick by scoring around the basket. Steven then came on for Zu and played brilliantly! Although the Croydon boys scored a few more goals a range of players from Bec scored mid range shots and the game ended 12-22.

New look Croydon 3 beat strong Nomads 4 at Royal Russell

Defeat at the hands of Supernova last week and an injury to regular starter Craig Stevens, amongst other injured players on the physio's table, led to a totally new look Croydon 3 side. Nomads 4 would be the opponents today at Royal Russell as the 3rds looked to get back to winning ways. The Nomads team boasted a range of players from across all levels of the club's team structure.

In first attack was Nigel, Josh, Julia, Annie leaving Ben, Tom, Anneka and Beccy in defence.

The game got off to a flying start with Josh, making his first appearance for 3rds, slotting home a lovely long range effort. This was met by a huge cheer and instantly the crowd were energised. Nomads quickly responded with a well worked runner to make it 1-1 and a change of ends. Attacks were being recycled well and with Ben and Tom keeping their opponents busy, Julia and Beccy worked into space allowing Beccy to sink a medium range effort to give Croydon the lead. At the other end Nomads had a penalty chance to level the scores once again but made a hash of the attempt. The miss was soon punished by Ben who made the scores 3-1. Croydon were defending hard, perhaps too hard at times, and from a number of fouls Nomads found themselves with a free pass, a penalty and another free pass; all were missed! Rather than let their head's drop Nomads managed to score their second of the game before missing yet another penalty chance! Nigel added to Croydon's tally with a short range effort and on the change of ends Tom fed Anneka for a runner to extend the lead further. Croydon looked comfortable. With half time approaching it was Croydon who took their foot of the gas as they surrendered a flurry of goals to Nomads. Not one, not two, not three, not even four but five goals went Nomads way and the game had been turned on it's head! The half time whistle was a welcome break from the Nomads scoring chain: Croydon now 5-7 down.

Nigel offered some pointers at half time seeing a number of tactical changes which would end up helping to change the game in Croydon's favour.

The second half scoring started with Annie scoring a well placed mid-range shot; the gap to Nomads was down to one goal, 6-7. Nomads immeditely reestablished their two goal lead before squandering yet another free pass opportunity. At the other end Tom managed to find space to score his own medium range effort closing the gap to just one goal. Beccy quickly levelled the scores at 8-8 before Nomads missed yet another penalty. And like when Nomads missed earlier penalty/free pass chances, the pattern repeated with a Nomads goal to once again take the lead, 8-9. The game was becoming increasingly tense as time ticked away, the game was there to be taken by one team or the other. One team needed to step up. At the end of the first half Nomads went on the scoring streak and this half there was to be another streak, this time of four goals. However, this time round it was Croydon 3 who achieved it. Through tireless hard work and tight defending the chances for Nomads by this stage were few and far between. The run to victory started with a well worked team effort leading to a runner for Annie. At the other end Tom took advantage of sloppy defending to sink his own runner. Nomad's discipline in defence was waning and a free pass opportunity was increased to a penalty following more indiscipline; Ben happily dispatched the penalty. And as if it was fate, following Josh's excellent long range effort to start the scoring, he ended it too with an equally well taken second. Croydon then slowed the game by working the ball well around the sections and restricting Nomads to long attempts which fell harmlessly away from the korf. The final whistle sounded and an impressive 12-9 victory was Croydon's.

Key Points:

Josh made an excellent debut for the 3rds, scoring two goals in the process.
Defending was very strong across the team and Nomads were limited to few opportunities.
Croydon never give up. Following a five goal streak against us and being down at half time - we came back fighting.
The whole team gave 110% throughout but Julia picks up MVP for her constant hard work leading to a number of goals scored by her teammates.

Croydon 3 continue their league campaign at Petchey next week against Highbury 3 who are engaged in a battle to avoid the drop out of LKA2.

CKC4 unlucky not to get something from Super Sunday game.

CKC4 took on Supernova in the first game of Super Sunday and hoped to get revenge on behalf of CKC3 who suffered a heavy defeat to the same side the week before. The game was very tight to start with, no goals were scored in the first 10 minutes. Mark, Vicky, Jon and Nicole on 4th team debut started superbly in defence while Roger, Jocelyn, David and Charlotte toiled away in attack. The deadlock was finally broken when David converted a penalty basketball style. Unfortunately this spring Supernova into action who soon converted the next three goals. Joc managed to score from 4 metres just before half time to keep the team in blue well in the game!

The first goal after the break was always going to be important in such a cagey affair and sadly it went to the opposition! Supernova then extended their lead to 2-5 but were quickly pegged back when Vicky sank a fine shot from 4 metres. The girls in blue were now dominating and when Joc scored from 5 metres it was game on once again! CKC4 were now playing some excellent Korfball and with the home crowd filling in the game was nicely poised. CKC4 lacked a bit of discipline in defence at times and gave away too many penalties. Ex blue, Pete Lindsey was able to convert his 4th of the game to keep a two goal lead! It then became a game of first! Nicole found a great feed position and Mark buried his runner to give Nicole her first assist for CKC4. Roger then dispatched his first free pass in Croydon blue before Vicky scored her first ever penalty! Sadly all these milestones happened either side of Nova goals so we went into the last 5 minutes 7-9 down. When Roger turned in the feed to score from under the post it seemed that CKC4 might take something from the game. It wasn't to be the case as the game ended 8-9. A highly entertaining game though and CKC4 deserved something from it! Well played all!
