10Feb02: SuperNova v Croydon

With second team regulars Sarah and Ryan taking a mid season sabbatical, a revamped second team travelled to Latchmear to play Supernova. With both teams having a similar season results wise this promised to be a closely fought battle for mid table superiority - and so it proved.

Croydon got off to a good start with a couple of long shots from Ivan, and looked early on as though it might be a comfortable day at the office. However, Supernova replied in kind and made it clear that they were not there simply to make up the numbers. Goals at regular intervals from all quarters, including an aggressive running in shot from Joe, kept the Croydon scoreboard ticking over, but Supernova no doubt used to the small hall consistently made chances for themselves and maintained a good shooting percentage to stay within two of Croydon for most of the first half. Despite dominating possession, Croydon only managed to go into half time with a two-goal lead, 9-7.

The second half continued in a similar vain with the teams trading goals. Then, early in the second half disaster appeared to have struck when Jenny Lee twisted her ankle again and had to go off. With no subs available Croydon had to play on with 7 players. Supernova smelled a chance to turn the game, scored a couple of quick goals and with 10 minutes left it was all to play for at 13-12 to Croydon. Perhaps it is a sign that this new team is really starting to mature, but at the realisation that the game for the first time hung in the balance Croydon stepped up a gear. The defence tightened, the attack was fluid and from then on there really only looked like one winner. Three more well worked goals, including a third for Julia (yes 3, three!) without reply took the score to 16-12 and Croydon to victory.

The most pleasing aspect to this game has got to be the way Croydon closed the match out in such a professional and emphatic matter. In truth they dominated the match and never looked like losing, but after narrow losses in recent weeks to Nomads and Invicta, it showed that this team might be ready to start winning the tight ones.
