Croydon 2 pay for poor first half

Croydon 2 hosted a decent looking Nomads 2 side at RR. With both sides fielding a mix of youth and experience as well as a few 1st teamers playing down, this had the makings of a good game. Croydon lined up with Hudspith, Belfourd, James and Hole in attack, with Chaney, Mills, Jones and Johnson in defense.

Nomads got the scoring underway with an early goal. Hudspith responded immediately with a runner from the first of four Belfourd assists in the game to turn around at 1-1. However, this was as good as it was going to get for some time for Croydon. Croydon’s 2nd attack struggled throughout the half to find any rhythm as the Nomads boys put a lock on Chaney and Mills, while Jones was clearly suffering from a chest infection and lacked her usual edge. At the other end Croydon were the makers of their own downfall as poor shot selection from James and missed chances from Hudspith meant they failed to keep the score ticking. Nomads proceeded to regularly find the basket, with plenty of help from an undisciplined Croydon defense intent on sending Nomads to the penalty spot as often as possible. Nomads went in at the half 3-11 to the good.

Croydon made an early change in the 2nd half, with Elliott coming on for the unwell Jones. The message at half time was to calm down and concentrate on the basics, and this appeared to pay dividends as Mills in particular started to find some space and slotted a succession of long shots. At the other end James also found his range with a couple from distance. However, despite warnings at half time Croydon continued to do Nomads job for them by sending them to the line for another string of penalties in the 2nd half, which meant Croydon were never able to get back into the game. Croydon did edge the 2nd half 8-7, a small consolation and proof we should have been more competitive, but in the end a comfortable 11-18 win for Nomads.

Croydon 3 show how it's done against Nomads 4

Croydon 3 took on an experienced Nomads 4 with another mixture of youth and experience - Steve Chadd, Mark Wright, Mandy Furlano and Vicky Goode made up the first attack, while Dom Bradford, Pete Lindsey, Kathy Dean and Lorna Elliot started off in defence. Croydon made early pressure count and Mark Wright started the goal machine rolling scoring a running in shot. Nomads replied almost immediately with their own but Croydon were too much for them to handle and thanks to two quick goals (a long shot and a runner) from Dom Bradford found themselves 3-1 ahead. Nomads soon braught the score back to 3-2 with a runner of their own.

The rest of the first half certainly proved an entertaining clash, Vicky Goode scored a long shot and Bradford coolly converted a free pass (5-2), a long range goal from Nomads did little to halt the Croydon scoring however as Mark Wright and Furlano put away a drop off and running in shot respectively. Again Nomads responded with another long effort but Lorna tucked away another runner to restore the 4 goal advantage (8-4). A mini revival from Nomads before half time had Croydon looking over their shoulders as the whistle approached but at 8-6 with seconds remaining Lindsey scored a long shot of his own to take the blues 9-6 ahead at the break.

After an action packed first half, the second proved just as exciting! Taking to the field ahead of their opposition Croydon were ready and raring to go, this carried into the game as Bradford scored his 4th of the game with a close range effort. Croydon were not finished there though, Wright, Furlano and Lindsey all added to the home sides tally with a variety of goals and the team were flying. With the score at 13-6, Croydon suffered their first real blow as Steve Chadd limped off with a painful looking injury to his foot/leg (?) without a sub ready on the sideline Croydon were forced down to 7 players as Mark, Mandy and Vicky tried to adapt to a section of 3 while in defence. Nomads took advantage of this scoring their first of the half (13-7) but with Paul Jeanes (and lots of pieces of borrowed kit!) now taking the field the numbers were balanced once again.

Vicky Goode scored a long range effort to double Nomads score and at this point Susie Davis replaced Lorna Elliot who had already seen some action for the 2nd's earlier in the day. Croydon were now struggling a little to keep their momentum going and Nomads used this to their advantage scoring another (14-8). Croydon were then awarded their first penalty of the day and despite a rather disappointing shout from one of the Nomads girls, just as she went to take it, Kathy Dean converted. There was enough time left for Nomads to find themselves one more goal before Mark Wright coolly converted another penalty to round off the scoring. Final Score 16-9 to Croydon 3.

In an entertaining fixture, Croydon started off well and played the game at a good tempo, moving the ball round especially well. With 5 running in goals, 5 long, 3 short, 2 penalties and a free pass scored, Nomads simply couldn't handle the great range of attacking play they faced today.

Well done guys!
