Croydon 4 got a late pass to go down to Twickenham to play Bec 5 starting at 17:20! Starting in attack were Bryan, Jon and a couple of newcomers Angela, playing her first game for the team and Anna. In defence were Becki, Phil, David and another newcomer, Jane.
Early exchanges were fairly even but Croydon crept ahead to 3-1 after Jon scored from close range following a good movement involving all the players. Becki was also slotting them in at her end and by half time had scored 3, one from a free pass. Meanwhile Jon had consolidated at the other end with a running in shot and a penalty. Croydon went into half time 6-4 up.
In the second half Bec's home support started to have an effect and they were awarded at least 2 penalties which they converted. For Croydon Phil missed 2 penalties (both identical) but redeemed himself with a goal from a free pass and a shot from mid range. By now you may have the impression that this was a physical game-far from it. It was played in a good spirit and despite the ref saying he would let a lot go to keep the game flowing he blew up for everything and the rest...until someone who knows the game quite well challenged a decision in the charming way only she knows how and he had to agree with her! (Ball started to move at free pass without being passed). Bryan also slotted one in from about 4m and completed our total of 9 but by then Bec had themselves scored the same. Another good performance from a mainly inexperienced team with good signs for the future.
(May I add that I hang my head in shame that I missed those two late penalties, it would have won us the match - Phil)
