Croydon 1 left trailing by the yellows

Croydon 1 headed to Whitgift School for a morning game against a very strong new look Bec 1 side under new coach Buckland.

This was always going to be a big challenge. Croydon started with Andy, Kim, and newbies Chelsie & Toby in first attack with Nigel, Vernon, Susan and Jane in first defence. It was a good few minutes before Bec opened up on the scoring and managed to bag 6 goals without a reply from the visiting team. Croydon had a good couple of attacks with the ball hitting the basket but unfortunately for the guests the ball just wouldn't drop in! Coach Ross called an early time out which seemed to help get an attack out with Croydon's first goal of the morning from Nigel.

The match continued in a similar 14-1 at half time. In the second half Becki came on for Susan and Ross on for Andy. The fast pace and solid defence from Bec kept Croydon to 5 goals by the final whistle. This was always was going to be a tough match against this season's favourites for the league, but hopefully Croydon can improve over the season to give the London team a more challenging match on home turf.

Croydon 2 outdone by strengthened Bec side

Another much changed Croydon 2 took on a Bec 2 side greatly strengthened from last season as their influx of payers into the 1sts pushed former national leaguers into the team.

Croydon started with Ed Chaney, Ryan Dring, Grace Stimpson and Sarah Withers in first attack while Dom Bradford, Kathy Bradford, Julia Johnson and Simon Mills (c) took first defence.

In the first half Croydon struggled to make too much headway in the attack although defensively managed to keep the score respectable. Bec quickly worked out Croydons attacking system and were cutting out the ball lines, something Croydon struggled to overcome. Coach Carr-Taylor changed things at half time looking to introduce a more free flowing passing play in order to keep the ball moving.

Two changes were made during the second half with Steve Wright replacing Dom Bradford and player/coach Ross Carr-Taylor replacing Ed Chaney. Croydon continued to fight valiantly but with the momentum and national league experience/quality on Bec's side could not put themselves into contention finding themselves on the wrong side of a 16-6 defeat by the end of the game.

Croydon 2 still have a lot to learn and with plenty of changes being made have yet to find the fluidity they would want with their play. However with more training and match practise these early challenges will hopefully set them up well to test their opponents for the remainder of the season.

Croydon 3 beat Bec 4 by 2 goals but the gap was closing...

Another new look to the third team that was heavy on the experience although we did have a first ever league game for Adam and first CKC league game Annie.

Conveniently Bec had a young boy playing so we laid out so the youth would mark the youth! First attack therefore was Adam, Paul J, Anna and myself with defence of Annie, Beccy, Martin and Steve C.

We started well with a long shot from Paul and even though the score stayed 1-0 for a while I felt confident it would be us to score next as our defence was super tight and winning the collect. I scored a drop off so all change. Our new attack had obviously been frustrated watching us as Steve scored nearly straight away and I do believe Martin's goal was pretty quick too! 4-0 looking good.

Our section worked on Adam with perfect result he had one of his goals allowed woo hoo! goal in open play, nice! Bec then wake up and score so Martin replies leaving half time score 6-1

The CKC plan was to work on those who hadn't scored yet and Bec's plan was to warm up and start scoring! Paul (ever greedy) scored again in our section hmm maybe I should give it to Anna as they did have a marital dispute on the pitch (in a nice way) Beccy after a heckle of used up all her goals pre the game decided to score woo hoo again, Annie did step up to take her penalty - more practise Mrs!

End result was 8-6 so we did let them back in but I never thought to panic. Adam got MVP as I felt he played in the section without looking out of place or thinking of covering for him in defence.

A very good game by all so come on the rest of the season... Thank you for support from Mike, Sam, Craig and soon to play Vicky x

Croydon 4 get first double of the season but sterner tests are to come

Croydon 4 repeated last weeks victory against Nomads with 3 new faces in the team. On hearing that Mike was playing Beccy couldn't resist dropping down to the 4ths to join him, Janine and David in first defence, whilst Sarah H played with Jon, Julie and Alex in first attack.

After the initial exchanges Croydon raced to a 3 nil lead courtesy I think first of Alex (customary 4 m shot) Jon (usual running in shot) and Sarah who scored from 3 m following a quick break out of defence. Nomads replied with a penalty but Croydon sped on to score 3 more from Beccy (running in) and a couple from David (customary close range). Meanwhile Julie had effectively ruled out her opponent and Janine found space for a couple of shots. So half time was 6-1.

The second half was more difficult. Nomads had tightened up their defence considerably but Croydon still had far more of the ball. Despite this the score pegged back to to 7-3 and then 8-5. I can't quite remember the order of scoring but I know that Alex got one more and whenever Nomads looked like they might make a game of it Mike dropped a long shot into the basket which was quite inspiring. David rounded it off in the last minute with another shot from close range.

So between the team they had all the shots to win the match but did struggle at times to make headway in attack, especially in the second half. In defence though there was great commitment with both David and Jon independently taking out the same Nomads player; (yes he was at the other end from David but that didn't matter!)

So well played everyone-looks like we did better in the second half than the thirds despite the same half time score-Ha

(David)I would just like to say that I was entirely focused on the slow available pass and had no idea that Jon or the Nomads player where also at full pelt going for the same ball that clearly had my name on it!!!!

Croydon Swans just miss out in league debut come back!

The Swans travelled to Trinity school with a strong side. Despite having a squad of over 20 it proved difficult finding 8 players for the fixture due to it being half term! Big thank you to Joe and Leo for stepping in and for Hannah for returning from injury slightly earlier than planned! The Swans started nervously and a strong Mitcham side capitalised! The first three Mitcham attacks saw them take a 3-0 lead. Ben opened the scoring for the Swans from 4 metres but Mitcham continued to ply the pressure. Swan passes were misplaced and there seemed to be a lot of tension as shots were going well wide of the mark. Joe managed one of his basketball style one handed shots to bring an end to a very disappointing half with the score 6-2 to Mitcham. The side were encouraged to take more care with their passes and move into space. This tactic seemed to work in the second half as despite conceding two quick goals the Croydon Swans then made a real game of it! The team worked hard and when Joe scored a runner followed by one from 5 metres the home side started to lose their composure! Ben then scored again to make it 8-5 and then Emma made a great pass from feed position for Ben to score again to make it 8-6. The Mitcham supporters were yelling to the team to slow down and relax but the Swans were pressing and when Jess scored with 3 minutes to go the game could have gone either way. Mitcham failed to convert a few chances but sadly Toms last ditch effort bounced in and out again! The game finished 8-7 but the team felt proud of their performance! A great league debut for all. Emma, Hannah, Jocelyn and Jess worked hard to contain four very experienced girls. Leo and Tom were unselfish all game and supported well but a special congratulations to MVP Joe on his hat trick and battling on despite picking up a knock! Next game is Nomads 6 where Swans will be looking for a high tempo performance!
