They were strengthened by the inclusion of a number of senior players who wouldn't be out of place in the 1st team; starting with Ellis, Johnson, Lindsey and (Susan) Wright in first attack while (Kathy) Bradford, Chaney, Codd, and captain for the day (Nigel) Hudspith took first defence. Stand in coach Steve Wright's instructions were simple; remember the things worked on in training and score more goals than the other team! Croydon flew out of the blocks and put instructions into practice with Ellis thumping in two distance shots using the trusty training move to perfection. The goals continued to flow for Croydon and Bec could only register a lone effort for the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8... 9 goals Croydon put away. A quarter of the way through the game and Croydon looked almost of sight already, Bec called a time out and Wright encouraged the side not to let up as the advantage grew. However the time out seemed to give Bec some focus and they finally responded either side of Croydon's 10th with two goals of their own to take the score to 10-3. Croydon replied with another 2 of their own (12-3) though Bec soon returned the favour (12-5) with just enough time before the break for Croydon to restore their 8 goal advantage. Leading by 13 goals to 5 at half time, Croydon were looking good for the win and coach Wright once again emphasized that the team should continue pressing for more goals and not take their foot off the pedal. Croydon made another good start to the second half and after trading a goal each (14-6) the home team scored 3 without reply (17-6). Bec however were starting to find a rhythm to their play and soon reduced the 11 goal difference by scoring 3 of their own (17-9). At this stage Croydon introduced some fresh legs with (Dom) Bradford and Mills replacing Ellis and Hudspith respectively. Both teams continued to trade blows and after a late flurry of goals the final score ended up as Croydon (2) 20-13 Bec (3). The one blot to the day was a late ankle injury to Lindsey who limped off with minutes remaining. A fine win for the 2nd team who for consecutive weeks scored 19+ goals. Susan converted a variety of chances (penalties, a free pass, runner and a long), Nigel found his range and put away several middle distance shots and Julia was in fine form putting in a great performance while scoring her first 2 goals of the season. Big thanks to Steve Wright for stepping into Ross's shoes for the day, Kieran for operating the shot clock and Mrs. Hudspith/Mrs. Ellis for their support from the sideline. Starting with Phil, Paul W, Beccy and Janine in first attack with Craig, Alex , Laura and Sarah H in first defence there were 5 players who could muster only 7 previous games between them, including Laura making her first ever appearance for the club. It didn't show that much with determination and athleticism making up for lack of experience.Laura was sticking like glue to her opponent and Paul was covering well but just a half yard of the pace. Craig was obviously out to impress his son by covering every inch of the court and Janine was managing to find some space. Alex, who has to suffer teachers all week, had the hardest task coping with a PE teacher at least a foot taller than himself and therefore couldn't get his customary well measured shots away. And it was in attack that Croydon showed their inexperience as they struggled to break down the Swans defence. As a result Swans steadily pulled away throughout the half until Beccy and Phil combined to provide a classic drop off. Half time was 6-1. Paul was feeling under the weather and Laura had only wanted to play a half so Croydon brought on Jon and Lorna to plug the gaps. Beccy set Jon up almost straight away but he missed from 3m but atoned a minute later when she set up a running in shot for him. At the other end Sarah and Lorna both popped one in and Craig comfortably converted a penalty. Phil finished off the scoring with a success from 3m, set up by Beccy. Meanwhile Swans had scored 3 more so Croydon comfortably won the second half 5-3. So lots of good signs for the future, including a least 4 supporters yet to play a game-maybe next time! And also good signs for the Swans who played well-before long you will be really flying!Match Report by JonD | Updated by JonD Final Score: Croydon 4 6 vs 9 Croydon SwansP Aish (2)C Stevens (1)A Burr (0)J Dean (1)P Westbury (0)S Hole (1)J Bovey (0)B Lockett (0)L MacKay-Elliott (1)Submitted by JonD on 24 Nov 13Swans just about keep their head above waterSwans took on their friends and rivals Croydon 4. Both teams were fired up for this game as Croydon 4 had a previous undefeated league run and the Swans had retained a win against Nomad 6- it was anyone’s game! A slight mix up in sections; starting attack was Roger, Joe, Amy and Emma and in defence was Ben, Tom, Wendy and Jocelyn. Swans started quickly and got off the mark when Roger scored a rebound off his own penalty. Emma then scored a running in shot from a quick feed from Roger to make it 2-0 to the Swans. Sections switched and not to be out done, Ben scored two good runners fed by Tom and Wendy in quick succession. Rog managed to lose his man and sink a shot from 4 metres to make it 5-0. Croydon 4, not to be ‘muted’ by the swans scored a drop off from Phil. The Swans responded immediately as Tom dropped off too and the score at half time was 6-1 to the Swans. Team talk from Ben was to concentrate on communicating with each other and choosing our passes carefully. After an action packed first half, the second half saw changes from both sides. For the 4s, Jon and Lorna coming on for Paul and Laura and Jess on for Wendy. Both teams wanted the win and certainly showed it. Amy continued to out jump her opponent in collect and Jocelyn kept finding space and putting her shots up. Within the first few minutes, it was Croydon 4 who found the basket as Sarah and Lorna scored making it 6-3. The Swans were feeling the pressure from their rivals highlighted by Jon’s running in shot to make it 6-4. Not wanting to sink like cygnets, the Swans continued to play hard and Emma converted Roger’s penalty win to edge away to 7-4. A great penalty from Craig and a long shot from Phil meant it was all still to play for but the Swans didn’t give up. Jess continued to get the in the feed position and Joe defended well. Finishing off with a composed penalty taken by Tom,the final score was 9-6. A great game played by all, with a mixture of enthusiasm and experience; the Swans started off well and never gave up whilst Croydon 4 always came back fighting. Bring on the next local derby!
