Croydon 1 edged out by Croydon 2One fairly grey night in Croydon led to the re-match between the firsts and the seconds. After a few forced changes the two gallant troops took to the battlefield again for the latest installment of 'squadmatch'. The firsts started with Adam, Andy, Kim and Hannah Robs in first attack. With Luke, Stephen, Dawn and Kay in first defence. Whereas the seconds sent Dom, Dan, Ren and Anneka out in first attack, leaving Ed, Zu, Becky and Hannah Russ in first defence. Play Ball!! The two teams had different agendas going into the game, the firsts was to maintain their representation as the top dogs in Croydon, but the seconds had that underdog passion that only comes out in these sort of games! The firsts, having split up the young bucks of Adam and Luke took the lead, when Adam found himself in acres of space to slot home the opener (enjoying the freedom of being the shooter in the section no doubt!). But the seconds weren't having any of it and soon equalised when Dan slotted a mid range shot home, after Captain Dom had missed his first penalty. Then the seconds decided to turn on their turbo packs and raced away with the first half, cruising to a 7-2 half time lead, including a penalty from Zu and 4 from Dom. The first half was a story of too many penalties given away by the firsts and solid defense from the seconds. But then...........................comeback time!! The firsts came out rejuvenated for the second half and gradually started chipping away at the seconds lead. However, every time it looked like they might have a sniff of a chance of a win, the seconds nicked a couple more just to keep them at bay. The firsts then scored one and missed a penalty and it was still in the balance. The seconds started to run out of steam, but just had enough to drag themselves over the finish line. Final score 12-11 to the seconds. A good, competitive game that showed how much both teams wanted to win. This was no casual training session game, both teams gave a good account of themselves. But in the end too many penalties cost the firsts and the seconds were able to finish the night triumphant!
