Croydon lose the game but win the league!Croydon 4 wound up their season with a trip to play Nomads 6 at Epsom. They needed a win, a draw or a loss to win the league so the match was a bit academic. This was the fourth time they had played a Nomads side this season and some of the faces were becoming familiar. In fact Nomads had 5 very senior players in their team compared with Croydons 2 (sorry Jon and Steve) so theyd probably played a few times before! Croydon started with Phil, Jon, Sue and Susie in attack and with Martin, Steve, Charlotte and Sarah (H) in defence. An unusually good start saw them shoot to a 3 goal lead. In no particular order Jons defender over-committed himself to leave an easy chance from 3m, whilst Sarah scored two goals, one being a running in from a Steve feed and the other a sort of drop off. But both teams were making errors and Croydon conceded 2 (converted) penalties whilst Sue responded with one of her own. Half time was 4 goals apiece. Some frustration crept into the second half as shots and passes went astray. Phil was rediscovering how to play in his first game of the season and slotted one in from about 4m, Jon got a rather untidy running in shot and Sue scored a long shot to complete the scoreline. At one time they were 7-6 up and could have been 9-6 up but for Phil and Sarah both having disallowed goals. But Nomads kept plugging away to equalize and finally went 8-7 up with 2 minutes left to play. The clock wound inexorably down on the electronic scoreboard but Croydon couldnt find a way through and ran of time to their only defeat of the season. However mission accomplished and only a slightly disappointing end to a fantastic season with very encouraging signs for next. This was Susie's first full game and she did very well against a very experienced opponent. Other youngsters like Martin, Dom and Javier have all come in leaps and bounds with help, of course, from the more experienced players. Thanks Dan for all your wise counsel and non-partisan support! Bring on the 3rd division! Match Report by JonD | Updated by Andy Final Score: Nomads 6 9 vs 7 Croydon 4Jon(2)Philip(1)Martin(0)Steve(0)Sarah(2)Susan(2)Susannah(0)Charlotte(0)
