Croydon 1 relegated after KV defeat

Croydon 1 took on KwiekVicta 1 at Royal Russell School in a match that would decide their fate for this season. They started with a new line-up though with Anna Jeanes, Luke James and Nigel Hudspith joined by Susan Wright for her first CKC 1 game of the season and Jane Belfourd, Zak Omar, Vernon Ellis were joined by Becky Pratt, also making her debut.

KV got off to a great start with a goal from their first attack from Andy Martinez while Croydon found the basket a couple of times but with defended shots. Belfourd scored a peachy running in shot to get the hosts on the board and despite a goal from the visitors there was a bit of stalemate from here on until the 9th minute which chances missed by both sides. Ellis scored a runner from a collect though and Wright scored a goal that the scorer noted as "long (v)". Ellis was now defending well against the agile Martinez and for a while Croydon kept their 3-2 lead but Omar conceded a runner, Hudspith couldn't get near one from way out, Rob Williams converted a penalty and Martinez scored a runner too and suddenly Croydon were 3-6 down. James had the chance to break this run with a penalty but he missed and Martinez scored again before one of the KV girls got in on the act with a turn in the feed. Ellis did finally get Croydon going again with a running in shot but KV had the last laugh with a goal just before half time: 4-9. A frustrating half for Croydon as for large periods there wasn't much between the teams but KV's boys were that little bit more accurate and their energy around the court couldn't be faulted.

Martinez started the 2nd half with a long shot that was the first of 5 unanswered goals for KV as their dominance in the 2nd quarter carried over into the 3rd. Referee Buckle was certainly giving the home side no special treatment as the rub of the green seemed to go against Croydon more than once but Pratt made no mistake as she was given far too much space. She scored a lovely long shot which Omar followed up with a drop-off but at 6-14 the game was already over unless something really quite dramatic could happen in the next 16 minutes. Sadly for the hosts it never looked like happening as KV scored 6 more interspersed with consolation goals from Omar and Ellis, final score: 8-20.

Again the scoreline suggests Croydon were well beaten but for large parts it wasn't as simple as that but at the end, it is the scoreline that counts and Croydon will have to lick their wounds and come back another day.
