Croydon give Nomads a real scare as they put 20 past them in thrillerNomads hosted Croydon at Epsom College in the English Korfball League. Croydon made 3 changes with Andy Withers, Vernon Ellis and Grace Codd in for Ross Carr-Taylor, Nigel Hudspith and Becki Pratt respectively. Nomads appeared to drop a number of their first choice girls down to the 2nd team match that preceded this one, a decision they later regretted as they put their sweaty kit back on in the 2nd half of this game... Nomads started well with 2 sharp goals from Bijker but Croydon replied in kind with 2 from Toby Clarke and to the host's surprise, this was the pattern for much of the first half - Nomads scored 2 and Croydon scored 2 - with Croydon goals coming from all over down one end and mostly Luke James down the other, with Irwin and Bijker doing the damage for the hosts. As it continued to rain goals, Croydon at one point stretched to a 12-14 lead but Nomads were able to peg them back and the half time whistle went at 14-15. The second half followed a similar pattern but with Nomads looking increasingly nervous they brought out their subs and the game changed with Croydon conceding a few running in shots and finding themselves on the wrong end of a few decisions, with a few poor shot selections thrown in for good measure. Ellis was replaced by Hudspith to counter this but Nomads were able to eke out a lead that they wouldn't surrender. James had a titanic battle with Irwin though which led to a few penalties for the visitors. Coughing up 3 penalties didn't help Croydon's cause and eventually Nomads were able to play for time and run the clock down on a great game in the EKL. After injury the magnificent 7 battle against strong Nomads 2 side. After a great run of form Croydon 2 travelled for an early fixture against an unusually strong Nomads 2 side featuring several national league stars. They started with debutant Becky Dean, N. Hudspith, Johnson and Lindsey in first defence while K. Bradford, Chaney, Driver and captain Mills took first attack. Croydon made a great start with Mills thumping home a shot from near half way within the first minute before Nomads equalised with the next attack. The game remained close for several minutes before an unfortunate injury to Johnson meant Croydon were left short handed and despite a valiant attempt to return to the pitch she was simply unable to continue. Continuing with just 7 Croydon now faced an almost impossible task. An impossible task it proved to be, despite every player giving it their all Nomads 2/1 took full advantage of their numerical advantage putting away seemingly every free shot they were afforded. By half time the game looked pretty much over as the home side commanded a massive lead and not even Carr-Taylor's introduction in place of Mills could make much difference to the flow of goals freely flowing to the home side. It was a valiant effort from Croydon second string against a surprisingly strong Nomads side whom featured a number of players who would later take to the national league scene to save their 1st team blushes. Hudspith while not being on top form still put away 4 goals and Becky Dean had a baptism of fire facing two top quality girls by her self on her debut in the regional league. It may not have been the result or game the 2nds wanted before the Christmas break but it certainly provided a stiff test and the side will undoubtedly want revenge on the return fixture when the playing field will hopefully be more even.Match Report by Simon | Updated by Simon Previous photo Next photo1 of 6 Final Score: Nomads 2 28 vs 7 Croydon 2Nigel(4)Ed(1)Peter(1)Simon(1)Ross(0)Kathryn(0)Beccy(0)Hannah(0)Julia(0)
Croydon 3 claim a well deserved win against Local rivals nomadsMatch report!! Croydon v nomads So the game started with Lorna, Charlotte, Paul and martin leaving second attack up to Ian, Zoe, Annie and adam. It was nomads that got on to the score sheet first but not for long as paul went running past his player setting up martin for a drop off. 1-1 nomads took the lead again 2-1 croydon was then awarded a penalty Ian kindly stepped up and put it away 2-2 nomads made a quick response to make it 3-2. Was this going to be the story of the game?? Martin then got croydon level with a well taken runner to make it 3-3 nomads to the lead again with a long shot to make it 4-3. Adam found himself on the score sheet with a brilliantly taken long shot to take the score level once again 4-4. Paul not wanting to miss out on the action put up a trade mark long shot to make it 5-4 to the delight of both teams the half time whistle was blown. Second half got under way and straight away martin got his 3rd of the game with a 4 metre shot to make it 6-4. Zoe then added her name onto the score sheet with a long shot to give croydon a 3 goal lead 7-4. Nomads then scored the next 2 goals to make it 7-6. After some great collecting from paul he set martin up to score a runner but sadly he missed :( Nomads then missed a penalty and paul scored a well taken drop off 8-6. Adams player couldnt handle his speed who was out of energy with about 5 minutes to go. Brilliant passing from croydon sets up martin for his 4th of the game with a shot from down town 9-6. With 2 minutes to go Ian found himself on the score sheet with a well taken drop off 10-6. And thats how the game finished. Well played to everyone was a real team performance :) Thanks to emma for taking notes :) Final Score: Nomads 4 6 vs 10 Croydon 3Martin(4)Paul(2)Ian(2)Adam(1)Zoe(1)Annie(0)Charlotte(0)Lorna(0)
