Croydon win another thriller by just one goal!

Croydon got up early and travelled up the M11 to Cambridge for their second fixture in the Promo league. The early start and arctic conditions in the hall clearly didn’t suit the travellers and they were soon facing a 6-1 scorecard conceding numerous penalties.

They started to regain their focus and composure, and the balls began to drop. At half time with the score line at 11-8, they were still in the game and some calming words from stand in coaches/subs Jeanes and Bradford, Croydon came back out raring to go and got two goals within a minute of half time. Game on!

Croydon then showed great team spirit with a real determination to get some points from the game. Goals were flowing in from all over the pitch and Cambridge were on the back foot. Croydon managed to secure a two goal lead but Cambridge then clawed it back to just one. Croydon were then forced to make a sub, as the energetic Chaney’s asthma caught up with him. With the game precariously balanced, Croydon continued to control their attacking play, and Chris West did a good job of controlling both teams’ defence as tempers and discipline flared. With just a few minutes on the clock, and Croydon one goal up, a foul on James gave Withers the opportunity to put Croydon safely clear. Unusually, the ball sailed over the basket but Croydon’s defence stood firm to see Croydon walk away with the two points.

This was a great performance from every player on the pitch, and shows what Croydon can do when they play for the full 60 minutes. Roll on next week!
