Croydon 1 draw with Supernova 1 after strong second halfAfter some tough games and a very close game last week week, Croydon 1 were determined to bring home a result this time, against Supernova 1. In first attack were birthday boy Keiron, Jack, Eliza and Kathy. Defending were Dan, Ed, Hannah and Ellen. No handshakes allowed, we waved or ‘elbowed’ our opposition in greeting and we were off! Kathy was surprised as anyone when she scored her first ever ‘first goal in a game.’ Some lovely goals from Keiron and Hannah, saw Supernova winning 8-5 at half time. But CKC1 are the Kings (Queens?) of second half come backs…. Eliza quickly got one back for Croydon, swiftly followed by a Supernova goal so we were still trailing 3 goals. There were goals from both sides and we were pretty much neck and neck with Supernova for the rest of the game. After a bit of panicking, Croydon pulled themselves together to win a well worked runner from Eliza and a beautiful long shot from Jack. FINAL SCORE 11-11 Big thanks to Croydon supporters and to Anna and Dom for coaching. Croydon 2 continue good form to beat Highbury 3After a positive result and performance against a youthful Bromley outfit the week before, Croydon 2 were presented with more experienced opposition in the shape of Highbury 3. Callum Elliot, Annie Campbell and Stella Butler all came into the side and joined Dom Bradford in first defence. Last weeks MVP Char Nash moved across to team up with Simon Mills (c), Hannah and Tom Raffield to attack. It was a bright start from the home side who went into an early 2 goal lead thanks to Simon and Char. Dom continued the scoring to give Croydon a 3 goal lead before Highbury responded twice without reply. Mills added his second with a smooth running in move before Highbury had the halves last word to make it 4-3 at the break. With Hannah struggling to continue, Anna Jeanes was ready to enter the fray and in an effort to bring some more organisation to the section the change made saw Annie Campbell swap for Jeanes when the two sides returned to the field. After what felt like an eternity the ball finally went out and Raffield (H) was able to leave the pitch, having battled on heroically, for Campbell to return in a different section. The second half continued with both defences on top, until Callum put his name on the scoresheet. If anything this seemed to galvanise the visitors and Croydon were left shell shocked as they conceded 3 times without reply to not only lose their lead but fall behind for the first time in the game (5-6). On another day the blues may have let their heads drop at this stage but the team rallied and it was Elliot who scored again to bring parity once more. Nerves were jangling for both sides as the scoring continued. Croydon's first attack section were finding their rhythm with the girls finding ample opportunities to run their opposite numbers. Raffield (T) worked tirelessly and Mills was able to find a number of feeds from different positions as Nash continued to best her player. It was Campbell who found her shooting boots (or hands) though and she found her mark twice in quick succession to leave a delighted Croydon now back in front at 8-6. Not to be outdone and to add to the excitement, Highbury were not finished and Croydon were punished for failing to hit their mark with a number of shots and a missed penalty as they fired in their response with two baskets of their own. With time fast running out and the scores level at 8-8, the hosts were starting to wonder if this was to be a day for draws. It was captain Mills who lead the final charge with a couple of nicely timed runners snatching victory from the jaws of... well a draw! Final Score - Croydon (2) 10-8 Highbury (3) Overall, a fantastic effort from the side with some exceptional team play and work rates. The first attack section which worked so well against Bromley continued in a similar vein with Char and Annie both fitting in perfectly. Their counterparts battled on to the end and Jeanes added her skill, organisation and encouragement to steer them through the second half.
