Croydon go down fightingCroydon signed off this years EKL campaign with a hard fought game against Bearstead at the season ending MGV at Whitgift school. Croydon started with a familiar line up, and the game started in familiar fashion with early goals traded before Bearstead found the basket with a couple of goals without reply to put Croydon under pressure at 1-4 down. However, after some stern words by coach Jeanes during a time out Croydon dug in and stayed in the game with some resolute defending. Both teams struggled to find the basket, and a solitary further goal to Croydon brought the teams in at half time with the score a paltry 2-4 to Bearstead. Croydon looked to press on after the break and some better build up work led to a number of chances, and Croydon soon brought the scores back to 6-6. Both teams went in search of the lead that would prove decisive, and at 8-8 it was Bearstead who broke the deadlock scoring four unanswered goals, three of which came from cheap Croydon turnovers. Time remained for one further goal for Croydon from the penalty spot, and the game ended 9-12 to Bearstead. It has been a long season, and it was nice to go out with a fight against a fast improving Bearstead side. Not for the first time Croydon will feel like they beat themselves. They will now drop down to the LKA regional league where the rebuilding work will begin, and a return to the EKL will not be far away.
