28Oct01: Croydon v Cambridge Tigers & Croydon 2 v Kwiek 2

Croydon got off to a comfortable start in the opening round of Premier League matches, defeating newly promoted Cambridge 25-10. The first half was a rather scrappy affair. For the first 20 minutes or so, Cambridge competed impressively and 3 goals from Cambridge's Jam Trubridge gave the visitors plenty of confidence. However, Croydon were able to ease out into a 12-6 lead at the break as Cambridge tired. As it became apparent in the second half that the game was lost, Cambridge brought on four substitutes and this enabled Croydon to cruise to victory.

Cambridge had their eyes opened to the harsh reality of life in the Premier League a few weeks ago, when Croydon humbled them 24-3 in a 40 minute friendly. With their first four matches against last season's top four clubs, Cambridge look to have set out on damage limitation tactics, picking up where Supernova left off last year. One end played rebound defence, and at times did frustrate the opposition. Yet Cambridge are by no means certainties for relegation this year. Trojans in particular may be concerned with Trubridge's long shooting, while the youthful combination of Lia Matthews and Sam Whittaker may also trouble other clubs, although it made little headway against Croydon's experienced pair of Alison Rotheram and Janine Collier.

Little can be deduced about Croydon's title or European aspirations on the basis of this game. It was a match they were expected to win comfortably, and did. But coach Steve Jones will at least have been pleased to have seen his team score 25 goals, almost all from open play. Defensively Croydon looked tighter than last year as well.

Steve Jones and Dave Butters led the scoring for Croydon with 7 and 5 respectively, but encouragingly four other players chipped in with 3 goals apiece.

In the Reserve Division, Croydon 2 proved too strong for Kwiek 2, winning 19-13. For Croydon, Ryan Dring produced one of his best performances for the club yet, scoring 7 goals to remind his coach of his first team potential. The experienced Paul Jeanes also added 5 goals with some excellent long-shooting.
